Forums - Sony - PS3 Sales Expected to Rise Up To 30% YOY on Price Cut

PS3 has two great things going for it this coming holiday season. One is Uncharted 3; the other is the just announced price cut to $249. Some analysts would say that the PS3 has been having a pretty hard time against the Xbox 360 in North America, but with the new low price, PS3 sales should spike nicely.

Speaking to IndustryGamers, Wedbush Securities' Michael Pachter admitted that he was "surprised" that Sony led the price cut movement, considering he always thought Microsoft would make the first move, and now that Sony has slashed the price on PS3, he's expecting immediate results.

"Sales will definitely go up, probably by 20 - 30% per month compared to last year," he said. "If Xbox 360 sales suffer at all, I think they will follow suit."

That, of course, is the key question now. Will all the momentum that Microsoft has been seeing with Xbox 360 and Kinect suffer on account of a cheaper PS3 being offered? At this point, we would think that Xbox 360 would almost have to drop in price sometime this holiday season. Perhaps Microsoft could bundle it for even cheaper with Gears of War 3 - that would be a winning combination.

As for Nintendo, all eyes are on 3DS and next year's Wii U. For the Wii itself, Pachter noted Nintendo "doesn't have much room" to cut price again.

I'd say, with the size of the cut... 20%

30% would be great though. Especially if it stays around the 30% mark. Sony needed a big game releasing right around now to maximise it!

SONY will maintain 20% bump

and bigger bumps for the holiday

should easily compete with 360 in north america

its funny that PS3 is still $250 and competing

Some pretty good deals starting to appear in the UK so i can believe it, best so far is £179.99 when you buy a second hand game, so as cheap as 189.99 with a game really. And who doesnt want a game to go with it.

They need to go all out on advertising.

Their advertising seems pretty weak at the moment, especially in Europe, I just find them annoying and they never seem to advertise their best titles, just Playstation Move, casual games and mediocre exclusives.

If they get the advertising spot on, they should be able to maintain a 30% rise in sales.

wouldnt a 30% increase on this week last year, be more than a 30% increase on last week this year.

My best guess is that PS3 sales will increase to roughtly (Edit: Between 65,000 and 80,000) in North America for a couple/few weeks then may drop slightly, but then pick up again due to Fall/ holiday time demands. (except expect a boost week of Sept 10th which is the week Resistance 3 releases).


For world wide Im guessing PS3 will increase to around (Edit: Between 185,000 and 200,000)units weekly for a few weeks and then drop a bit for a short period until Fall/ holiday demands set in. (except expect a boost week of Sept 10th which is the week Resistance 3 releases).

IMO if MS does not drop the price of the X360 they will be behind PS3 for a few weeks WW by about 60,000-80,000. Then if MS still does not drop the price they will still make gains due to the Fall time demands and will be behind around 30,000-40,000 WW on average. HOWEVER, don't forget we have some big releases for both consoles this September including Resistance 3, Gears 3, Madden (usually gives a slight boost), Fifa. So there will be a lot of sales fluctuations in September. I think the biggest boost will be Gears 3. That is by far the biggest release name in September and probably for the year in terms of Hardware boosts. Yes, Resistance is big as well but not even close to Gears 3.
