My best guess is that PS3 sales will increase to roughtly (Edit: Between 65,000 and 80,000) in North America for a couple/few weeks then may drop slightly, but then pick up again due to Fall/ holiday time demands. (except expect a boost week of Sept 10th which is the week Resistance 3 releases).
For world wide Im guessing PS3 will increase to around (Edit: Between 185,000 and 200,000)units weekly for a few weeks and then drop a bit for a short period until Fall/ holiday demands set in. (except expect a boost week of Sept 10th which is the week Resistance 3 releases).
IMO if MS does not drop the price of the X360 they will be behind PS3 for a few weeks WW by about 60,000-80,000. Then if MS still does not drop the price they will still make gains due to the Fall time demands and will be behind around 30,000-40,000 WW on average. HOWEVER, don't forget we have some big releases for both consoles this September including Resistance 3, Gears 3, Madden (usually gives a slight boost), Fifa. So there will be a lot of sales fluctuations in September. I think the biggest boost will be Gears 3. That is by far the biggest release name in September and probably for the year in terms of Hardware boosts. Yes, Resistance is big as well but not even close to Gears 3.

I thought that after the release of Gears 2 it was clear Gears was no longer a hardware seller?

According to charts there was a modest boost to Xbox 360 hardware the week that Gears of War 2 was released, but less than Halo releases. Also remember Gears of War 3 is getting its own custom console and pre sales of that seem to be doing quite well, so yes I believe there will be a rather sizeable boost to hardware sales the week of Gears 3 rlease. Especially when compared to other top games releasing this year.

Just because the lack of quality concerning exclusive content a game's HW boost will not be different, a constant supply of good games should create console sales and fewer good games should make the console sales decrease.

Look at the Halo franchise. Halo is a big reason the original Xbox stayed alive and did decently for being MS's first console. Most games the Xbox had the PS2 had as well, but the PS2 sold WAY more, because it had more BIG name exclusive content. Halo is the golden child of the Xbox brand. When you think of Xbox 360 you immediately think of really big household names like Halo, Gears, Fable, and Forza along with some other ones. When you think of PS3 you immediately think of Gran Turismo, Uncharted, God of War, and LBP along with a slew of other ones. In the first couple of years of this console gen it appeared that Xbox 360 had more interesting exclusives than PS3. The X360 was more attractive due to lower price and better exclusives, so it was selling better. Now it has changed and Sony seems to have more exclusives along with new ones they are announcing. It used to be that Sony was THEE dominant hardcore gaming console back last gen with the PS2, because they had many Huge exclusives like, Grand Theft Auto, Final Fantasy, Metal Gear, and now those brand names are no longer exclusive to PS3.
So exclusive content does have a significant impact on hardware sales. I think without the Halo franchise (or one that was very successful) the original xbox would be all but dead in the water, because people would say even moreso that the Xbox has nothing different to offer from PS2. Imagine if Halo and Gears of War franchises didn't even exist on Xbox 360. X360 sales would not be what they are today, because everyone would just say, "Oh well I might as well buy a PS3, because X360 has nothing different to offer me." The only exclusive that PS3 has that is on tier with Halo and Gears brand recognition is Gran Turismo. Uncharted is getting closer, but not there yet.Im not in any way claiming that PS3 exclusive titles are bad. In fact I think PS3 has some bad ass exclusive titles that are very fun to play. I just think that X360 has had a couple of exclusive game brand names that have reached a high level of popularity. PS3 has a lot of very popular exclusives but has not yet had any besides GT that match the brand name recognition of Halo and Gears. Just look at the some sales of their biggest franchises:
PS3:
Gran Turismo 5: 6.42 million
Metal Gear Solid 4 GOTP: 5.25 million (Metal gear brand no longer exclusive)
Uncharted 2 UT: 4.73 Million
Little Big Planet: 4.46 million
GT 5 Prologue: 4.11
Xbox 360:
Halo 3: 11.3 million
Halo Reach: 8.6 million
Gears of War 2: 6.11 million
Gears of War: 5.95 million
Halo 3: ODST: 5.89
Forza 3: 4.9 million
When a Halo or Gears game releases it boosts x360 console sales quite sizeably. The same can be said for PS3 console sales when a GT, or Uncharted game releases.
So in conclusion out of the above BIG name game franchises the only one releasing this September is a Gears title. Therefore x360 console sales will surge during that time. Resistance 3 will be popular and will boost PS3 console sales upon its release, but will not be near the boost of x360 consoles sales when Gears 3 releases. Its just for the fact that Gears of War is a much bigger brand name to the gaming community.
