Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo's next innovation: Massively Single-Player Online Game

source

We’ve got a new patent to discuss today, and this time it’s not some a filing for another fancy cellphone airbag. Surprisingly the folks over at Nintendo managed to win the patent for a “Massively Single-Player Online Game”. If you’re wondering what it could mean, let us break it down for you. It’s basically a single game where a user’s actions change the world for him/herself – and everybody else who is playing the same game.

It’s basically all the benefits of an online world, without the hassles of having to interact with real people. You react with the result of their actions. So let’s say a player finds a pile of building materials to build a house, the next player won’t find those materials, but they’ll get to see a finished house instead. I would imagine the same rules would apply if one player let a monster out of a cage and didn’t kill it, it would probably find its way into other player’s games as well.

According to the patent, “Those who want to play games that are more dynamic, not-based on Al and not-pre-scripted like multiplayer games, however, don’t want to ‘deal’ with other people, appreciate the privacy it provides.” Sounds like a good idea – all the randomness of an online world but without having to deal with “noobs” or player-killers (PKs). It’ll be interesting to see how Nintendo applies this in its games (assuming that they do make use of the patent).

This has to be either the stupidest idea or the next greatest innovation.

I'm pretty sure similar things have already been done and it also seems like a silly idea. It's also a patent, it pretty much means nothing until an actual product is shown, otherwise we'd have five threads a month about these weird ideas that usually never come to be. The reason why this patent might gain more traction from a news point of view is because Nintendo have two new consoles out or coming soon, people are going to take every rumour, patent or random phrase and try to use them to define what the future of these new consoles will be.

Nintendo should make a Pokemon game with a similar structure except without the whole 'single player online' thing, that parts stupid.

Bet with Conegamer and AussieGecko that the PS3 will have more exclusives in 2011 than the Wii or 360... or something.

I think that with the right brand even a Free2Play could be, if Nintendo stay true to their words and do a major online renovation with the WiiU.

In that case i will see well a Pikmin in a MMO adventure, that's the kind of game that makes you explore and powering up our pikmins could be cool.

But in the matter of facts i think that Nintendo will never done a thing like this, not in the way i have said it will be.

This sounds perfect for a game mode in Animal Crossing. Or a strategy game infact it sounds like it could be a game mode in many of Nintendo's franchises. I can think of ways in Pokemon, Zelda etc...etc... I think its a great idea and I bet Nintendo will use it, though I can't see a whole game being built around this at least not any of the existing IP's. Nintendo might create a new IP to launch this idea and I think that would be amazing. Also as I said sounds perfect as a game mode in Animal Crossing, if you don't have friends on your friends list you can visit other towns without interacting with other players.

Their are endless possibilities of how Nintendo could utalize this patent. Imagine if somebody had been smart enough to patent MMO back when it seemed like a radical stupid idea. This could be gold in Nintendo's hands!

From what I've read so far, the concept is similar to how Spore [PC version] work.... I am not really sure which one make that concept first but I just feel it's similar and it's not something new anymore. I just don't think it's next innovation anymore, cause there is at least one game that apply this concept.
