Alot of VGCians call themselves atheist but what does it really mean to you?
Firstly - To be, with almost complete certainty, that there is no god that intervenes with life
Secondly - To have extreme scepticism and refusal of the assumption that any god would have had to of made the universe. The apllication of Occam's razor, essentially.
It seems alot of people are calling them atheist these days but they don't know what it mean to be one.
They do it as they believe in the modern culture and want to be a part of it.Many also do it as they think themselves to be knowledgeable being one as alot of scientist call themselves atheist.
The appeal to authority works for both theists and atheists. It has nothing to do with the merits of atheism (or theism) though. I won't continue further on this point.
Alot of people who call themselves atheist think of the big bang as creation but never question it which itself means that you are not an atheist and think that the day we die the world ends for us and we will be no more than stardust.
I cannot, for the life of me, understand what you mean at all here. As for the second part, simply because what we have to say isn't cheery doesn't mean it's any less correct. Best to view what we know and make conclusions from it than to will for something to be comforting and then look to support it.
The problem here is that atheist mainly go according to the order of the things in our world and how we give material things so much importance. We never realize the consciousness that is at play and if the order of things was correct then life has to reincarnate as that will be the cycle.
What? This doesn't even make sense. It's nothing more than conjecture.
So please tell us in detail what it means to be an atheist and how is life supposed to be functional without reincarnation or how it just continues to be how it is
What do you mean by funtional? Do mean meaning or importance? Or do you actually mean functional (biological)?
If by meaning, well the answer is simple: We simply strive to be better people (by a numerous of means) for the benefit of both ourselves and others - no different than anyone else.
If by functional, the answer is blatantly obvious: To pass on our gene pool to continue our species... I refuse to believe this is what you meant.
