I've thoroughly enjoyed Plants vs. Zombies, PixelJunk Monsters and Defense Grid.

All three are unique experiences, too.

You should check out Toy Soldier. It's one of the best tower defense games on XBLA. They are releasing Toy Soldier: Cold War for Summer of Arcade in the next week or so. I would definitely check it out.

there is also a couple really good ones for free on some serious flash game website.... if you don't want to invest... personnaly I have defense grid which is alright and I do like plant vs zombies but more for smartphone than worth buying on home consoles IMO

go on Warcraft 3 download a bunch of TDs there it's basically where the genre got popular or maybe made as well.
Though a lot of them are best played with friends.
MafaTD, GreenTD, ElementTD, Tropical Tower Wars, GemTD are some of my friends favorites as i remember.
also on iOS bloonsTD isn't bad.

What I want from a game.

Gameplay > Story > Content > Graphics

Visual Style > Graphics

Smooth Camera, Intuitive Controls

Friction! When everything feels right!
