Forums - Gaming - Which game from this generation will still be relevant in 15-20 years?

You can look back and see how certain games were amazing in their day but, as technology progressed, those awesome games eventually became irrelevant and obscure.  I'd have given up ten copies of Super Mario Bros. 1 in exchange for a game like Shadowgate but we all know which game stood the test of time, better.  I remember how games like Mortal Kombat and Stunt Race FX topped my "must play" lists.  Now, I'd much rather play Tetris Attack or Axelay.  Sometimes, those cutting edge games don't hold up when their graphics and technology aren't among the industry's best, anymore.

So, here's where you come in.  Which games from today do you think will be just as much fun in a decade or two as it is right now?  Which game blows you away now but won't even be worth a second look later on?  Braid?  Uncharted?  Street Fighter 4?  Mario Galaxy? Gears of War?

Discuss.

I think Valkyria Chronicles will be one of those games that never loses its luster. It has a simple, yet captivating art style. It won't ever be accused of pushing the PS3 to its limits but, like Wind Waker, it has a certain timeless charm. It also features gameplay that relies more on using your brain than something like online mult-player that may/may not be supported in a few years.

VALKYRIA CHRONICLES and HEAVY RAIN

I was gonna say Heavy Rain, but I'm a little on the fence on it. Defitinitely Flower and LIMBO though.

L.A. Noire won't get passed 2012 in my opinion.

I am the Playstation Avenger.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii. It's predecessors stood the test of time, so this game should as well. Easily.

Gran Turismo 5 is the top pick for games that will fail. Games that make realism their biggest selling point often end up aging terribly. One only has to look back at Gran Turismo 1 and 2. Chances are that 20 years from now Gran Turismo 5 will be looked at as being as primitive as the PS1 games are today.

Except that GT will still be around just as Mario, maybe GT7 by then! We'll still be driving on trial mountain in 2031.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii will look just as primitive in 20 years as the original NES Mario does now. Although still 10 times more charming then GT1, both, in their original form, are a horrible mess on a 55 inch HD screen. Actually both are quite similar, gameplay hasn't changed much for either.

Valkyria chronicles maybe. But I thought the same thing of beyond good and evil until I played the HD demo. It didn't age as well as it did in my mind. Braid stands a better chance, the gameplay is pretty unique and doesn't rely on the graphics.

I'm hoping that pixeljunk eden stands the test of time, one of my favorite original games this gen.

Agreed with Gran Turismo but New Super Mario Bros. Wii was dated as soon as it released. Donkey Kong Country Returns would be a much better pick.

I know you are Dutch, but that doesn't mean you need to be high all day.

Oh you!

I know some of the games that CGI mentioned are pretty groundbreaking but some of them, I just don't think will stand the test of time. Gears and Uncharted seem to get by on their graphics, more than their gameplay. While both are awesome now, I feel like they'll be forgotten after the next big thing in graphics comes along. I still have fond memories of Contra 3 but I wouldn't want to play it these days. It's multi-player and intense graphics and gameplay are just outdone by pretty much everything, these days.

Same goes for L.A. Noire. Even as a fan of games like that, I got bored with it before my first playthrough was complete. Yeah, it was groundbreaking as far as graphics tech is concerned but then how many of us want to play Legend of Zelda instead of OoT/Twilight Princess? How many of us would rather play Snes Starfox or Virtua Racing instead of Starfox 3DS or Gran Turismo?

I totally agree about Wii Sports, Little Big Planet, and I'll even toss Dance Central into that mix.

Yeah but in 20 years GT6 might be out.

Final Fantasy XIII. I'm sure whatever the most recent Final Fantasy is in 2031 will make it look golden by comparison.

But really, Flower.
