For the small set i guess Wipeout HD will be still played :)
The game seems timeless to me unless they are making another wipeout on a homeconsole.

Depends on the criteria. I see Gears as more influential than Uncharted from a gameplay perspective, but Uncharted 2 is more of a staple than an influence as it's game style is not anything groundbreaking, but it's execution was next to flawless. Something like LA NOIRE has them beat on facial animation, but not much else. So the criteria will determine what games will be remembered overall. Very few games will be remembered for everything they did. Great discussion though! |
I disagree with Wii Sports.
IMO the game will be remembered forever, however who will want to play Wii Sports, when in 20 years we will have way better alternatives for motion games? It already sucks compared to Move, I imagine in PS6 generation what we will have.
BioShock, because the more games will start being appreciated as art, the more games that were actually ambitious in trying to be serious artisitc creations will be appreciated.

Well the way I see it pretty much no multiplayer shooter or game from a previous gen series (mario bros, Donkey) will be relevant in 15-20 years, I really don't think any of the huge name games will be very relevant too many games on relying on graphics this gen, Uncharted will look dated in the cut scenes so people won't want to play it for story and cover based gameplay and platforming have been done before and frankly the original super maro bros and donkey kong country and all those others will be more relevant in 15-20 years then the ones on wii same with games like rachet and clank but I think there are a few games which will stay relevant
Demon's Souls - This game is great, the machinics are solid and the level designs are pure genious it has alot of glitches and the fact that everything in the game is in the same place every time takes away from multiple play through but I think even in 15-20 years people will enjoy atleast 1 play through
Flower - Simplicity incarnated, the gameplay is so simple it can never be outdated and it's art style will ensure it doesn't look poor in 15-20 years
Mirror's Edge - not the most critically acclaimed or best looking game but it is unique, it's gameplay is a rush that just isn't found anywhere else, I believe either Mirror's Edge or it's sequel (if EA ever makes it) will be atleast somewhat relevant in 15-20, I sincerely hope more games borrow aspects from it
Last Guardian - Okay not out yet I know, but come on team ICO games are pretty ageless, they tell stories in such a unique way and still manage good gameplay that you can't get anywhere else
god of war uncharted i think this gen will have more games that stand the test of time then others.
Easy question. Half-Life2.
During '90-'95 we had Super Mario World, during '95-'00 we had Ocarina of Time and '00-'10 we had Half Life 2.

Haha, Heavy Rain. I knew this would be mentioned before I even entered this thread and that's one of the first titles that came to my mind as an example of a game which won't be played in 20 years.
Actually this is a very good question and I think we have to distinugish between relevance and own taste.
Examples of games from recent years that will be called relevant in 2 decades:
World of Warcraft is without a doubt the game that will be remembered as most influential.
Minecraft will be remembered as one of the most successful indie games ever created.
Wii Sports and Wii Fit will be remembered as selling a system like no other games before.
(A counter example: I think for some reason Nintendogs won't be called relevant in 20 years as its influence is already neglected today).
Games that will be fun and played in 20 years from now:
Plenty - as remakes and as as re-releases. I and thousands of other people still play The Secret of Monkey Island more than 20 years after its release and this is just one of many PC games from 1991 or before that are still played today and there's hundreds more on consoles.
The following come to mind:
Starcraft 2, Civilization IV, SMG1+2, NSMBWii/DS, Mario Kart Wii (as a few examples for games which will be considerd as providing timeless fun just as their predecessors - Diablo III will most probably be in this group as well).
Red Dead Redemption (not for its gameplay which isn't unique but for its pretty unique setting), Dark Souls, Valkyria Chronicles, Mass Effect Trilogy, Flower, Portal 1+2 (as a few examples for possible future cult games of this era which will most probably still be played by fans in 2 decades).

^^^You make an excellent point, Cgi. I actually did mean "Games that will still be played" but I didn't word it right. With that, pretty much every game you mentioned will be remembered fondly, like Tomb Raider, even if they aren't played.
I'll leave it as it is, though. It should make for a better discussion.
I'd say... too soon to tell.
For a game to be continued to be played 15 years from now I think it needs to have a few distinct qualties. Most importantly be the peak of a genre that isn't really innovated on or being made that much.
The Super Mario Brothers games lasted on because they were simply the best, tightest platformers that existed, and platformers are a rare breed.
It's the same reason people go back to Fallout 1&2 so much. Nobody even makes turn based D&D type RPGs anymore.
Even stuff like Goldene Eye and Perfect Dark... when was the last time there was a game seemingly focused on splitscreen in the same room party style FPS vs mode?
We won't know, until we find out what genres or styles (if any) become a casualty of the next generation.
