So are there any "must-have" 3DS games out yet that aren't from Nintendo?
I heard Mercenaries 3D was ok but not amazing, and Snake Eater 3D is looking more and more like a plain old port.
SF IV looks good but is not going to sell me on the handheld, so that leaves only Revelations which isn't coming this year AFAIK.

I'm not saying these all aren't games I'd want in my collection if I already owned the system, because they are. Just not games that are gonna make me want to invest in it any time soon.

kinda in the same boat as you, I played DOA recently and despite not being a fan of the series, it was fun. Not something i would buy a whole new device for, but will get it eventually

TBH, I can't say I'm sad about it or anything since I haven't even seen their post production 3DS game on AC, I did just pick up the AC pack from Steam for 27 bucks from the summer sale though, so I'll play through them on my PC from the start again, woohoo!

  Revelations, Super Mario, Mario Kart and Metal Gear are all scheduled for Q4, I believe.

Another one after Saint's Raw. Oh yeah, third parties have changed they said...no, they'll always be the same, it's not important what game has been cancelled but the fact that they announce a strong support which later vanishes. Do they want to sell well? For Ubisoft a good Ghost Recon or Driver won't do much, they could do well but they decided to go the same route as they took on DS (Imagine, Puppies and shovelware like that)...well, other SH are waiting for our money.
