The point I was trying to make is that Nintendo has lots of new IPs, but they do not have a high profile, very commercially successfull new IP aimed at the 'mature'/'traditional'/'hardcore'/'non casual'/whatever (I dilike a lot of those terms as well) audience, in the way that MS has Gears of War and Sony has Uncharted. They have new IPs that appeal to that audience, such as Pandora's Tower, Soma Bringer or Xenoblade, but these are low, or maybe at a push medium profile and don't sell that many copies. As I said earlier, the closest I can think of is The Last Story. Equally, they have new IPs such as Wii..., Nintendogs and Brain Training/Brain Age, which are among the best selling games of all time, but they largely appeal to a different audience. I think that this is the reason that many people believe that Nintendo don't make or publish any new IPs, when in fact they do. It's just that they haven't heard of or dismiss most of them. Nintendo next generation would need IMO a new IP that is like Uncharted or Gears of War, not necessarily in genre, but in the fact that they are high profile, both very critically and commercially successful and appeal to gamers outside the expanded audience. |
I see from a business perspective they have played there cards right with some new IPs that sell well as you said Nintendogs and Brain Training/Brain Age. Should that matter though to each person coming here looking for games they want to play? Well I say no. A person can argue all they want that a company is doing well by staying profitable by making games for many types of people, but the bottom line is many people are not going to care unless games are made that meet their standards of fun. So having a new popular, highly rated shooter like gears and uncharted would certainly help. It would make up for an area they are drastically lacking in. I think I get your drift, yes they have made new IPs, but they have not made games from genres such as shooters. Other than the fact that I was not aware of all these IPs I think we were thinking similarly all along. The fact is Nintendo has never made many mature RATED (not mature) games and that is one reason I think they fail to capture the respect of many gamers. Until they do, I as a gamer will look out for my own interests and not just the interests of a company. So I will still address the fact that Nintendo lacks many games in genres I enjoy until they start making them.

Mario games are actually not that common when you compare them to the number of Call of Duty, Halo, and other such games released in the same time frame. It already feels like a long time since the last Mario game.
I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.
People usually start asking questions about franchises needing a break when there's an obvious decline in quality. There is no such decline within the main Mario games. The last release is one of the highest rated games of the generation after all.
However, I would say that they could cut back on the spinoffs. Mario Kart and SSB should be more than enough, considering the longevity of each release in terms of playtime. Mario Sports games and Mario Party (and whatever else I'm forgetting) can be given a break for a while.
There is a difference between one character being used in a wide variety of games over various genres and a franchise seeing multiple spinoffs (and spinoffs of spinoffs) whilst mostly staying within the same genre though...

It doesn't need a break, but I think he should made less appearences. I mean we have Super Mario 2D, Super Mario 3D, Mario Kart and Paper Mario, these series are great and no one should touch those. But for example Mario & Luigi while it was great it felt like a repetition (of paper mario), Mario Party is good but why do they make Mario Party and Wii Party at the same time? Just make only Wii Party and put more effort into it. Also instead of outsourcing Mario Stikers and Mario Sports Mix, ousource a new F-zero (like they already did with GC) alternatively give us back the Wave Race or the 1080° IP.

this. the games are fine but he does make quite a few appearances
Pretty sure that the only people that would say "yes" are Nintendo haters. It's not like the games are declining in quality or failing to sell well- the only outcome would be that Nintendo loses money and millions of people would be less happy with their videogame experiences :(

~~~~ Mario Kart 8 drove far past my expectations! Never again will I doubt the wheels of a Monster Franchise! :0 ~~~~
Mario most certainly DOES NOT need a break!
That son of a b*tch is the laziest character in all of videogames.
Not once have I seen or even heard about him doing his job!
When a Mario Plumbing game is released, after it gets a few sequels then we can talk about taking a break.
But first the man needs to get a hold of himself and quit jacking around with mushrooms and race cars, grow the f*ck up and punch in the clock like the rest of us!
Slacker!
Until you've played it, every game is a system seller!
