The saddest thing about this debate is that everyone is ignoring Biohazard(Resdent Evil) Code Veronica which is the true canon Biohazard(Resdent Evil) 3 hat had a full 3D polygon environment and new camera and more action focus but still had the rue horror feel that is the style I would love to see again.

This whole thread is like it's ignoring the existence of RE:Revelations and Lost in Nightmares.Both are a step to the right(if we assume that back to roots is the right one) direction.
Capcom has been pretty clear about the franchise's future.Other games will be survival-horror,other will be action.What 6 will be doesn't really matter.

@Reboot argument
Resident Evil 4 is not a survival game.Nothing on this game says survival.Exactly like Dead Space.The MGS3:S argument would be correct if MGS stopped being a stealth game.RE4 is a reboot.MGS3:S or 4 or whatever are not.
Only one design in RE4 is enough to make RE4 a reboot.Loot.Not camera.Not not having zombies.Not anything.Just loot.

i love the first game and i loved RE 4 even more. I would like a combination between the two which looks like we are getting with Revelations.

The worst thing they could do is go back to the (terrible) old formula. Honestly, I don't know why people hate change and innovation so much.

I Love innovation and change, but it doest mean its always right. Final Fantasy Xlll is NOT the right direction for Final Fantasy.

RE4 is the most successful game in the series critically, and it was also very successful commercially. Obviously change was for the best in this situation. And isn't FF13 really just a step back from 12?

in what way was it more successful?

Critical acclaim (by far). There are only 2 ways a game (or other similar product) can be successful: critical and commercial. RE4 is by far the most critically acclaimed game in the series, and it also managed to bring the series back to commercial success, after years of decline (each game since 2 sold less than the one before it).

are you getting what im saying now? metal gear solid has had little to none change gamplay wise compare to the Resident evils series

Are you sure this reply was meant for me? I don't really see how it in any way counters what I wrote. RE4 is definately a reboot (never said otherwise), one the series needed desperately considerign that it was close to irrelevancy when the game came out. And it all paid off considering the fact that RE4 ended up being the most acclaimed game and the series, and it actually managed to have great sales compared to previous games in the series.

The camera angle also changed in MGS games too (if you actualyl think that MGS4 has the same camera angle as MGS1 you need glasses), it's just that it seems more like a natural evolution, because that's exactly what it was. Konami/Kojima didn't recycle exactly the same gameplay like Capcom did with RE, so MGS never declined and was never in need of a reboot.

phinch1, as far as I know Resident Evil was not rebooted. A reboot has got nothing to do with gameplay, they could make a Resident Evil: The Strategy Role Playing Game or a Resident Evil: Puzzle Edition and it would not necessarily be a reboot.

A reboot is when you forget the story that came before and all the continuity that it entails. This is often done when a story has gotten so many contradictory parts that it becomes more and more difficult to add elements without retconning more and more parts or creating absurd explanations. In such a case the reboot allows to keep the familiar overall themes, characters and general plot while starting from scratch.

So, which RE game tossed the continuity of the RE universe?
