Forums - Gaming - What do you think of people who Quit Gaming because they want to "grow up"?

I know people like that. They care more about personal image and being "cool" rather than what they enjoy. Some of my so called "friends" have acted like this. They say stuff like "I don't play PS3 any more, it's gay, I go outside." Usually followed by them implying that you have no life to make them feel better about themselves.

The ironic thing is, although they do go outside, they do fuck all, they just waste time sitting down and occasionally walking from shop to shop in the high street buying fizzy drinks (mostly this "monster" shit because it makes them look cool).

Last time my friend said something like this I just lost my patience with him and took the piss out of him in-front of everyone. I can't remember my exact words but I tore him a new asshole. I remember saying "Putting down your friends and bragging that you go outside won't make your dick any bigger." He probably hates my guts now.

Tell your friends to do what I did...look for a woman that dosn't force you to give up something you love just because its not very "grown up" in their view. My wife actually enjoys playing with me sometimes. She even plays Zombies mode in Black Ops with me and loves it! lol.

I will admit I havn't been able to play as much video games as I used to, but I still get to play practically every day. Yes, when you get married and even have kids you have more responsibilites. That dosn't mean you have to give up gaming! Gaming is my hobby as well as many people's hobby on this site.

This is how people live their life! They accomplish their resonponsibilities and then spend time at their hobby.

I've never known anyone like this... BUT I have known people who simply stopped playing video games since it was simply not their thing.

Maybe at a younger age people lack the ability to express themselves or even know themselves. It's not hard to imagine someone teetering between various social pressures and their own desires. I see no problem with someone who is interested in other things moving on from video games.

Wanting to "grow up" is a funny thing since most adults can behave quite childish in various circumstances. It's more of a mission statement for the person who aims to improve themselves from their current position in a way that's socially respectable.

OP - On the basis of your English and name, are you living in China?

You call out your friends for still being virgins... but I heard in China since the amount of females is so low, girls will only think about dating guys if they own a house.

lol I speak perfect english, just that in my first post, I'm typing it half -asleep and somehow IE 9 HATES this website. It doesn't allow me to edit a post, or even quote someone. I just installed Chrome just to reply you.

And I do not live in China even though I'm asian. I live in Singapore. The younger generation generally speak good english, some even perfect english. As demonstrated in my post on the 2nd page, the older generations speak broken english. And FYI, my name (Edmund) is a very English name, not something from China. And no I do not have small eyes, neither do I know Kungfu. I'll get my butt kicked in a fight. =P

Brendude -> That's exactly what a friend said to me. It is really hurtful and annoying. He's fat and keeps bragging about how he can date many girls at a time but all the girls he date looks like shit. He keeps saying that he's grown up and wants to quit gaming but keeps messaging me to come over and play games. He even wanted to borrow my PS3 to play (He brags that he earns way more money than me despite not being as educated as me....and he can't afford a PS3? Geez)

They gave up video games to get girlfriends (and yet they didn't even succeed)... If they only knew most girls/women age 17-24 enjoy Mario Kart a lot. One of my old ex in college was pretty much addicted to Mario Kart Double Dash. I also got into my current relationship by inviting a co worker over to try out the Wii. Wii Bowling pretty much hooked me up. Once she started doing good and getting strikes we would hug which eventually led to more.

in short

video games = pussy

Do what I did, don't stand for that shit, tell him what you think of him, it will be satisfying.

If I may, however, play devil's advocate for a minute, I think there is also a side to gaming which is unhealthy and can sometimes be addictive. I think when people think about gaming as a 'childish' endeavor, they are sometimes thinking about bad gaming habits more than gaming itself. Unfortunately bad gaming habits are all too common, and aren't always dealt with properly. This leads to extreme behaviors like missing sleep/meals because of a game on one hand, and also to bursts of rage quitting and going 'cold turkey' with the claim that gaming is for kids on the other.

In this context, what is indeed 'for kids', are bad lifestyle habits, and I think we'd be fooling ourselves if we didn't admit gaming encourages those, to a small extent at least.

The other reason I think gaming is frowned upon by the majority of adult society is because we are brought up in a way that encourages us to be more rational, and develop control over our emotions. Gaming goes against this trend by often letting us reenact our fantasies or our nightmares, and allows us to unleash behavior that is considered inappropriate around other people. This is something that could prove to be equally as beneficial as detrimental in the long run, because while some will always take the 'bad' behavior they have learned with them when they leave the couch, others use games as a release for tensions that have built up elsewhere, and return to the real world more balanced and civil for it.

If I may end with a somewhat unrelated comment, I have often asked myself 'what other form of art is similar to gaming?', as have countless others I'm sure. I've heard people say that sometimes games are like Movies, sometimes like Sports, sometimes like reading a book (in the sense that you can stop wherever you want and come back to it later, as well as in the level of immersion).

These are all true, but I have also come to think of games more and more like Music. They both have huge amounts of unexplored potential as forms of expression, and can affect us emotionally in powerful ways, to the extent that sometimes we even lose control a little bit.
Sometimes I think of our time as similar to the time in ancient Greece, where music was used in savage, often barbaric rituals, as a means to bring out animalistic behavior. If you've studied history you know the Greeks were very much aware of the power (and dangers) of music. Even today, music can still bring out unusual, uninhibited behaviors by listeners which can also be considered 'immature'.

Perhaps gaming is similar in the sense that it may take centuries until we learn to use it properly, and unlock it's true potential, as well as our own along with it.

well then again this is true from any addiction what so ever and most frowned upon addiction are 100% for mature audiences most of the time..... (cigarette, alcohol, gambling, medical drugs etc) so even though I agree with what you say... this is just true accross the board when it comes to abusive behavior.... it's like the argument about movies or VG being responsible for violence in the youth... it is BS.... even if true in some cases..... the weakness of an individual towards a specific stimulus should not be concidered as a rule for all.....

now what differenciate games from other form of art... it is that in VG the viewer/consumer can actually actively interact and make decision where the overall story is going... and experience the scenario the way he wants..... much like those RPG books use to be..... except that you have a visual support on top of it

I think those people needs to grow up...

And I don't get the "Must...find...girlfriend" thing. It just makes you sound desperate, and that's hadly a "cool" thing.

Do they plan to have kids? Would be to childish for them to play videogames (or any game) with their kids?

I feel sorry for those who don't want to be a kid ever again

PS: I am 40 years old, I am married, I have 7 years old son and I have never stopped playing games

I think about playing a mario level as being similar to performing a piece of music...

Until you've played it, every game is a system seller!

This is the common mentality :

gambling : for adults , very socially accepted

Sports : all ages , also a game very accepted

Games : for kids , not completely accepted yet
