Forums - Nintendo - Valve: Wii U has power. Gabe Newell talks.

Even more great news and positive chatter about Wii U.

Around the Network

As previous post already said, Newell also praised the Wii and talked about developing for it but nothing happened.

My only hope is that, while with the Wii he only talked about possibilitie of the controller and how much fun it could be developing for it, this time he is talking about the specs of the console saying that it's technically easy to do it, so maybe this time it may end with something real.

Please excuse my bad English.

"Wii U seems to be a lot more powerful than the previous generation," he said, adding, "It sort of fits better into the scalability in terms of graphics performance and CPU performance, so I think it'll be a lot easier for us to fit it into our scalability model."

A lot more powerful than the previous generation? did anybody notice this?

Yeah i noticed, but he could be talking about only nintendo from previous generation with the Wii, but who knows, i hope he means all of the consoles.

Maybe he's noticing that Wii u is powerful than all the 7th Gen systems.

That is what he's saying. Some people are trying to say he means more powerful then the Wii. That is simply not true. Everyone knows WiiU is way more powerful than the Wii, it's HD for Petes sake. So when he says "Seems to be a lot more powerful..." obviously means compaired to the HD twins.

Things like this give me hope for the direction Nintendo is taking with Wii U.

I don't care how many consoles they sell. I care about the games.

And as an average gaming consumer, I would say this is all we should care about.

I'm happy to hear this news, and I can't wait to see what comes to fruition in the years to come. What is interesting is that he actually called out the Wii as being powerful, which people have been throwing into question recently. If Gabe Newel is happy with it, it must pack a nice punch.

As a consumer I care about sales becaue if it a series doesn't sell it goes away.  Some people really here have a hard time understanding this or why would anyone want Nintendo and gaming in general to sell less?

I bet you were the same people cheering in the 90's (I'm doubting if you were even born this time.) the direction comic books were going then acted all shocked when they went bankrupt.

You are correct, I wasn't born in the 90's, I was born in the 80's.

Also, please re-read what Savior posted, what I posted, and then your response. We said we didn't care much about how many consoles they sell. By default it's faily obvious the console will easily sell well enough. We said nothing about not caring for game sales. In fact, I said that what we SHOULD care about are the games. And for anyone who's aware of gaming sales in the last 20 years knows, console sales do not directly correlate into game sales.

I hate to sound rude, but you can take your elitist attitude and shove it up your ass, dude.

A bit ironic that you proclaim to be all about sales and series maintaining themselves, yet your avatar preaches that the Wii is "killing gaming"; a console that has greatly broadened the gaming market and sold upward of 90m units...

I could be wrong but I suspect that the entire reason the hardware of the Wii U was choosen was to ensure that it would receive cross platform development from third party developers regardless of whether they were targeting current generation HD consoles or next generation systems.

Effectively, developers can release their PS3 and XBox 360 games with moderate graphical upgrades on the Wii U at 1080p @60fps, and (if Sony and Microsoft go all out) games targeting next generation platforms could be released on the Wii U with minor graphical downgrades and still run at 720p @ 30fps.

I doubt the 2nd part of minor downgrading. If xbox 3 and ps4 are capable of that unreal next Gen tech demo, then Wii u will be I the same position its in now. The unreal tech demo made Zelda HD at e3 look really poor. Check out unreal Samaritan tech demo on YouTube.

The difference in processing power required to run a game at its highest level of detail at a resolution of 1080p @ 60fps and to run the same game with its second highest leve of detail at 720p @ 30fps is very large. With Crysis 2 as the example you would need the top of the line GPU to play it at its highest detail at 1080p @ 60fps but you can play the same game using a Radeon 4770 (a 3 year old entry level gaming graphics card) at the second highest level of detail at 720p @ 30fps.

Edit: So if the Wii U can play most of the HD console games at close to the highest level of detail in their PC counterparts while maintaining a resolution of 1080p at a framerate of 60fps I think it should be able to handle (most) of what the next generation systems do while maintaining a resolution of 720p at a framerate of 30fps with minor graphical downgrades; assuming that the next generation systems are rendering at a resolution of 1080p at a framerate of 60fps.

Too bad PS4/720 won't have games that look  like the Samaritan demo.
