disolitude said: So this thread has taught us the following:
First Console with motion controller: Dreamcast atari with the le stick ( fixed ) First console with screen built in controller: Dreamcast First console with games using headset : Dreamcast First console with camera for "controller free gaming": Dreamcast And add First console with online network for online play: Dreamcast
Pretty much every trend for the next 15 years in this industry was covered by the Dreamcast. |
ealier companies like atari also had other innovations creditted ( unfairly ) to nintendo like analog sticks ( first found on the vectrex ) and light guns ( magnavox )
|
Sorry but Analog stick was an innovation if you compare it to the vectrex, what you are looking for is invention or creation.
|
no analog sticks were not invented for the vectrex im pretty sure that they were first used for pc applications but they were innovated for use on the vectrex an innovation that was later picked up by nintendo
|
My mistake it was. However I do believe Nintendo does deserve the credit, because the second part of innovation is making something sucessful.
Typically the second part:
"While both invention and innovation have "uniqueness" implications, innovation is related to acceptance in society, profitability, and market performance expectation." - I use a similar defination, however mine might because I look at everything from a business standpoint, when it comes to Innovation.
Add: I typically view innovation as a sucessful introduction of a method or idea. Thus why a lot of people are going to give the credit to Pseye as the first Camera, or Xbox Live as the first online gaming, or Sony Playstation as the first media device.
|
i may be wrong but my understanding of the word innovation is that to innovate means to build upon an existing idea and improve it which was done by nintendo, sony, microsoft etc who put their own spin on the first implementation of analogs to gaming ( vectrex )... however if we do accept that the meaning is acceptance into society wouldn't sony be creditted more? i say that because the ps1 outsold the n64 and the ps2 outsold the gc meaning a higher market share for sony when the analog setup was first being implemented by both companies
|
Yes that would be fair assumption, sony does get uncredited with a lot of things, however N64 did still have acceptance in society, but not to the par of Sony. (I took the defination from wiki, typically my textbooks does better job of dealing with innovation...namely product innovation, but I am not going to get that out, but basically my understanding is acceptance in relative terms.)
Add: For example Sony PSN might have more individuals, but a lot of people will credit Xbox live for the innovation (even if Dreamcast did it first).
Sony's true success was brought by how they handled third party (some might call that process innovation), and how the implemented media formats increating more storage of data on discs.
More add; I need to get back to Finance, and study the last chapter, have an exam in two hours.
Final Add for this comment: Sorry about the horrible grammar, I am doing way to many things at once, and typically I start screwing up everything.
