Forums - Gaming - Has the Apple Ipad Beat the Nintendo Wii U to the Punch?

Real Racing 2-dev (and recent EA acquisition) Firemint took the opportunity at WWDC today to announce AirPlay support for its latest iOS racer. When the just-announced iOS 5 is released later this year, it will enable AirPlay video mirroring support, which Firemint will be using to do a lot more than just mirroring; the iPad 2 will be able to wirelessly send an HD signal to your Apple TV while using the iPad 2 to handle real-time racing telemetry and tilt-based steering.

Of course, this is the reverse of Nintendo's just-announced Wii U functionality, which sends a wireless signal from a console to the WiiPad. Notable differences between the two platforms include the fact that the iPad is a standalone portable device that can be used without a TV and this will be available sometime in the next four months, as opposed to late next year.

personally i think this kind of functionality being present on tablets prior to its release could be a real problem for the wii u

It makes it a direct competitor, but the problem is, WiiU will support multiplayer, vastly better graphics, far, FAR better controls, and a hundred more control options.

Gaming will most definitely still be far better on the WiiU, but this function DOES make WiiU not a 100% unique experience.

Yeah but who wants to buy a $600 controller?

Or Apple TV.... assuming you have to get that as well.

If this use of the IPad becomes popular it can only be a good thing for the WiiU, since (if that happens) by the time WiiU comes out people will be much more ready for this kind of experience (2 screen gameplay with your TV), with lots of advantages for the WiiU side (as previously mentioned multiplayer and FAR better controls and control options, and also lots of other things the WiiU will have that IPad probably won't e.g. seeing what your friends are doing online).

If beating the U to the punch means throwing out all pad controllers and buttons, then maybe.  To see ONE feature of the U and say it is the whole thing, is to miss the point.  I also trust Nintendo to come up with better games than whomever jumps on the iPad bandwagon.

I actually think this is exactly why Nintendo went this direction with their new console. Touch screens have been very popular the past few years. Moving there in the console space, they have beaten all the traditional players to the market, and they can bring content that the phone providers just can't.

Apple TV has to be involved unless a TV is built in with the functionality.

With this combo, it would cost the magic $599.

MikeB predicts that the PS3 will sell about 140 million units by the end of 2016 and triple the amount of 360s in the long run.

This is like the whole "Vita & PS3 = Wii U" thing, which is correct to a point, but they are separate products at heart.
