So now that Nintendo unveiled the trick behind the WiiU which is the controller, do you think it will add anything to gaming and add a new way to control games like the Wii did? Do you think new genres will emerge because of that controller?
I'm personally underwhelmed by the controller and the idea. If I understand correctly, it's still a Wii but with a tablet this time. And games that requires the Wiimote will not be playable if the tv is turned off I believe. Also the fact the only one controller will be supported by the console is a major drawback to me. Nintendo went backward with their console this time imo and they're not showing progress in the control department. I liked the Wiimote idea way more.
Microsoft will undoubtedly continue with an upgraded version of Kinect which is still very early in it's life and has yet to gain core gamers trust. I'm an early adopter of Kinect because I like dance games and Kinect Sports a lot (family fun) but I understand that casual games may not show exactly what Kinect can do. I believe that controlling menus without touching anything was inevitable and Microsoft is the one (right now) with the technology so they integrate it to all Xbox features that has nothing to do with gaming.
Some people (like myself) think that Kinect will make it to other devices like tvs, media players, houses and possibly vehicles which makes it the real advancement in controlling technology. As for being better for games, it still has to prove it can do it and will Microsoft bring nav like controller with their next console or will they stick with a new version of the actual controller? Will they do a Nintendo and allow WP7 phones and future tablets to interact with the Kinect?
My real concern is with Sony. What are they going to do next gen with their controllers? Will they develop a better PSEye that works with wands? Are they going to ditch the wands and only try some kind of Kinect tech with the PSEye? Will they also attempt to do a Nintendo and bring some kind of tablet controller or will they use the PS Vita as the controller? I don't know what they'll come up with. I remember some poster said Sony patented some sort of device that tracked body in 3D with sound or something. Will they surprise us with new technology?
This thread is not about graphics or online capabilities or non gaming applications, strictly about new ways to control games. So what do you think next gen will bring controller wise?
