I see the Wii U as being a bridge between what Nintendo was trying to do with the Wii, and what developers felt comfortable doing with the HD consoles, and it will be interesting to see how developers use the controller.
As we've seen with smartphones and the DS, the touch screen has amazing potential to be used to create strong puzzle and mini-games, and many of the best HD console games (Bioshock, Mass Effect 2) have built-in mini-games/puzzles, so there is some obvious potential applications for this technology. While some people wouldn't see the value, having far more variety of better puzzles and mini-games could definately improve many games.
There is the potential for new kinds of games and/or experiences ...
One thought I have is for a digital-augmented "pen and paper" RPG. You have a dungeon master tell the story while holding onto the tablet controller, and they can select environments or characters on the tablet that are displayed to the TV screen, and many of the battles or events could take place (to some extent) on the TV with interaction from players using Wiimotes.
