It was invented in 1924, and didn't go on sale until 1928. It was also banned for a month and a half in 1943.

"Sliced bread is a loaf of bread which has been pre-sliced and packaged for convenience. It was first sold in 1924 and took four years to become the "norm", advertised as "the greatest forward step in the baking industry since bread was wrapped"."

So there we go, wrapped bread was the thing that stuff was said to be not as good as, before sliced bread

the bread slicer?

“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”
