Forums - Gaming - Iwata on Wii U price: 'This is not going to be cheap'

As expected.

Above: still the best game of the year.

thread title is um yea. and Nintendo has always had good proceed systems so I dont see this changing.

I think the price is relieving, Gilgamesh and his last thread about how the WiiU was just going to be on par with PS3/360. If that were the case then the WiiU would have a much lower price tag. If it were just a PS3 I'd expect Nintendo to price the console at 250$ as we all know Nintendo could make a profit at that level. This confirms that Nintendo's console is going to be far more powerful then a PS3/360. I can't wait to see the actual machine in action.

As for price I expect somewhere around 350-450$. I don't think Nintendo will go as high as PS3 did. But I think the price tag will be pretty high. Remembering Nintendo always turns a profit on their hardware, I'm sure this console can't be any cheaper then 350$. As for this competitive pricing point Iwata made, he's probably refering to a competitive launch price meaning similiar to the launch prices of competitors consoles. Not actually launching the console at a competitive price to PS3!

"In another interview this week, Iwata signalledWii U will likely be priced at more than 20,000 yen ($250) in Japan when it launches next year.

Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime said earlier this week that the newly announced console will offer consumers "fantastic value" for money and be "competitively" priced with PS3 and Xbox 360."

Cool, so WiiU will be 200 bucks at the most. By next Fall I guarantee the PS3 will be < 200. Hell I would guess it'll be 150.

The 360 will be 100-130 for the core in Fall 2012.

Reggie shouldn't say competitively priced against the PS3 and 360, it's not even the same generation. PS4 and 720 are around the corner. They'll be powered by maxwell and equivalent chips capable of running UE4's samaritan demo. 3rd parties will move to that around 2014-15. WiiU will get the 2nd best version of 3rd party multiplats for a couple of years though.

Of course it will cost more than 20.000 Yen. That's the Wii's official price now.

It would have been more informative if they told us if it will cost more than Wii at launch (25.000 Yen).

Saying that a new console will cost more than the current one after the first price drop is only stating the obvious and nothing more.

Now the question is, did Reggie actually say the PS3 and 360, or did he say "the competition"?

I guess the Nintendo that made gaming affordable is gone.. It better not be any more than $300, or they will be making a big mistake.

A HUGE mistake if it's over 300

Lol oh no its gonna cost what the PS3 and 360 (elite model) cost right now.

People will happily look for a second job to afford it!
