this is slightly off topic, but does anyone know if the Wii U plays gamecube games?
on topic: this is quite disappointing, but the PS3 didn't do this either at first, hopefully it'll be patched it like the PS3 did

This is a little disappointing, but not surprising. It's just the way that Nintendo does backwards compatibility. The hardware switches to compatibility mode and disables all the new features of the hardware/firmware, as seen with GBA games on DS, GC games on Wii. Nintendo would rather build in 100% BC with no new features than go through the hassle of ensuring the new features work with all software (see Xbox 360).
I had always wished I could play GC games using the Wii's own memory storage and classic controller.

Wii games will still look better on Wii U due to the HDMI connection. You won't see much difference though.
The REAL question about the backwards compatability is if we can transfer our savegames, VC and WiiWare games...

Also see the PS2 which smoothes all PS1 games, and the early PS3 which upscales any PS1/2 game... they can do it if they want to.
That is disappointing, and tilts the needle one click to the 'less likely to buy it' side. It would have been nice to use Wii Sport's Resort on my HDTV.
But I realize they do want us to repurchase everything, again.
Maybe I have low standards but I'm just happy with 100% BC, with or without extra stuff...
If the WiiU gets the same homebrew support as Wii then maybe we'll get something better later.

I think it's lame. Wii U is suppose to be on par, or slightly better than 360 and PS3. But it can't freaking upscale games...WTF.

I'm not sure that's the case here even though it was the case with Wii's BC with the Gamecube (they were fundamentally the same architecture). Actual emulation might be needed unless AMD is making a special version of a modern GPU which also includes the Wii GPU's functionality.
Even the CPU's instruction set / encoding might be different requiring some translation, I'm not familiar with IBM's CPUs.
My Mario Kart Wii friend code: 2707-1866-0957
Well, I hope it's at least possible to stream the Wii games to the controller. That would still make it better than standard BC.

playing right now: Xenoblade Chronicles
Hype-o-meter, from least to most hyped: the Last Story, Twisted Metal, Mass Effect 3, Final Fantasy XIII-2, Final Fantasy Versus XIII, Playstation ViTA
bet with Mordred11 that Rage will look better on Xbox 360.
