I'm not sure that's the case here even though it was the case with Wii's BC with the Gamecube (they were fundamentally the same architecture). Actual emulation might be needed unless AMD is making a special version of a modern GPU which also includes the Wii GPU's functionality.
Even the CPU's instruction set / encoding might be different requiring some translation, I'm not familiar with IBM's CPUs.
