Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo Cafe new touch "controller" is standalone

If it is a standalone peripheral...

No doubt it will be bundled with every Café SKU but my question is..

How much would a standalone tablet cost in comparison to the controller?

Would it be unfathomable for the Tablet to be $74.99 or more and the controller to be $34.99 or more?

The interesting question is whether or not Nintendo intend the tablet to be a standalone entertainment device in addition to just a peripheral. If the thing has built-in Wifi and its own simple processor/memory/OS,  good enough to play NES/SNES style games and simple apps like a web-browser and media player, the split in price could be even bigger...

That's a frightening prospect considering how Nintendo has treated multimedia on the 3DS.

Pixel Art can be fun.

I don't own one... What's so terrible about it that can't be fixed with a software update?

Until you've played it, every game is a system seller!

I made a thread suggesting this over a month ago ...

I could be wrong but I suspect that, with the success of add-ons and shells in the previous generation, one of the major updates Nintendo made to the Wiimote was to make it a far better "Brain" to be integrated into stand alone devices. The advantage of this is that Nintendo (and third party publishers) could release very complicated devices that might not be that expensive because a large portion of the compexity could be managed by the Wiimote or the console itself.

sounds like my old mock-up wasn't too far off if this is true... it makes sense considering they also sold the wiimote and nunchuck separately this gen.

This is from a while ago, if I was doing it today I would've had little to no buttons on the tablet part, instead opting for a second attachment on the other side to offset the wiimote.

I doubt the screen will have more than start/home/select buttons. Break-apart controllers were part of the Wii development. I will link to the source if I can find it

Edit: here is the link

So Nintendo has had the “break-apart” controller in their development of the Wii

    R.I.P Mr Iwata :'(

That'd be so cool!

I love to play wii games doe to being able to have my hands on my knees or wherever I want, without being constrained to have both hand so close like with "regular" controllers. The fact that the screen in Cafe's controller may be detachable allows you to play like with the Wii.

Also having a standalone tablet to play simple games could be so good! Imagine a new Metroid with a tablet bonus game, an old school shooter like Galaga, R-Type or Super Thunder with Samus' ship... *sigh*

Then basically, it's a first party Udraw tablet? good, because I'm actually saving up to buy a Udraw tablet.

I agree completely... this old mock-up was made when the first 'Cafe' rumors just started to leak, before Nintendo even confirmed there would be a new console at E3. Back then people were thinking it would be more like IGN's mock-up, ie: a controller with a screen, or a tablet with buttons, depending on how you view it.

I actually did some ergonomics testing before deciding to have it look the way I did; The tablet, despite having shoulder buttons, wasn't meant to be held with two hands like a regular controller but rather used with one hand while resting on a table, kind of like a laptop's track-pad. The other hand would then either use the improved Wiimote pointed at the TV, or use a stylus on the remaining part of the screen when playing away from the TV. I made the buttons on the tablet symmetrical mainly in order to be ambidextrous (and to offer limited b/c on the tablet by itself)...

Unfortunately I didn't go to the trouble of explaining it completely... probably should've drawn a mock-up with a user's hands but I got lazy

Either way, I think the 'break-apart' Gamecube controller with screen inserted in the middle is just as likely.

two more days...

but I think my thread in my sig is gonna be pretty much right on.

I think it will have two standard controllers in the box. wiimote+ and this new controller w/ screen.

How many hours until Nintendo E3 show start?

Well now I got it!
It would make much more sense as stand alone piece!

Let's wait, maybe will be presented very soon...

Switch!!!
