This is from a while ago, if I was doing it today I would've had little to no buttons on the tablet part, instead opting for a second attachment on the other side to offset the wiimote.

 

I doubt the screen will have more than start/home/select buttons. Break-apart controllers were part of the Wii development. I will link to the source if I can find it

So Nintendo has had the “break-apart” controller in their development of the Wii
