Forums - Website Topics - The future of VG Chartz, what does the site mean to you?

I haven’t posted very much, but I’ve been a member for a while now and was a non-registered viewer for far longer than that. I think the site has thus far done a great job of expanding and adding content.

When I first started visiting, VGChartz was a site I would check maybe once or twice a month, or if I wanted to look up some data on past sales or something. Most of my news came from Joystiq and Kotaku. As more features and data were added, it became a site I visited on a weekly basis to see the charts at the end of the week. Over the past few months though, it’s become a place I visit daily for the News & Editorials section as well as the large amount of activity in the forums. At this point, while I still drop by, VGChartz has mostly replaced Joystiq for me as a second source of news and discussion alongside Kotaku.

In terms of expansion, I don’t really think it’s necessary to try to be an all-in-one spot by adding reviews and such. When I want to read a review or preview, I usually go to metacritic or simply Google and check out a handful of reviews from different sites to get a few different viewpoints. There are just tons of sites reviewing games these days, so I think it’s become more useful to do review roundups and just link to reviews rather than try to compete with established review sites. It is still attractive content though, so some kind of partnership or a reviews section with user reviews and links to reviews might be nice. Overall though, I’d hate to see the sales data and discussion ever take a backseat to this content.

I think the News & Editorials section is where there’s the most potential for immediate growth. The editorials from TheSource, y-koron, and others are really interesting, and while they may sometimes be little more than forum posts, it’s content that you don’t find on other sites and creates discussions you don’t find elsewhere. I wouldn’t mind at all seeing more news content added here (or the section being divided in some way). The only thing I wouldn’t like to see in this area is getting too much like Kotaku in terms of ‘non-news.’ Kotaku posts tons of random stuff like cakes, cosplay, collectibles, etc. It works well in their format, but I think that stuff should be left to the forums here while only featuring actual news on the main page.

I also think it’s important to keep the Hot Topics section somewhere on the main page. I can only speak for myself, but the combination of the News & Editorials and Hot Topics sections is what turned VGChartz into a site I visit daily rather than weekly or less.

Other than that, the most important thing is to keep improving the sales data (which I’m sure is always being done anyway). It might be nice to add a section for PC game sales though, as it’s one of the few sales areas we rarely get much information on.

I'm keeping the duplicate thread going, but I feel there's a lot more duplicates than what's in that thread. And also finding the games that have missing data plus the games that have outdated data and then updating said data, well that just seems like way too much work for just one person, especially when the DB is over 8500 games....

Also on the Others charts, it would be great if we got a Top 200 like we get for America and Japan instead of a Top 50

@slacker

I agree with the PC data, there are very few PC games with up to date data.

When you say you don't get data for more than 80 games, do you mean old games, i.e. games that don't chart on either America, Others or Japan?

Well the japan numbers for PES ps3 version isnt in and m pretty sue its a million seller >_>

@ioi congrats on the 5mill, keep up the good work.

I know I am new to the site, but it does seem like the industry knowledge, certinally in terms of each companies positioning, of the community here is pretty much umsurpased. How about using this to create vgchartz pradictions. Allow individuals to estimate sales for week, month, year then combine to create a community estimation. Factor in the 90% rule to discount some of the more.... 'optamistic'... estimates. It would be interesting to see how close we as a community could get.
My guess would actually be rather close. This could then also be combined with individual product sales, longevity estimates, market positioning etc.
Just think how nice it would be when our estimates began to gain more credability than some of the proffesionals.

I would like this site to keep focusing on sales data. Try to improve the accuracy and add more/better software data for Others.

I don't want this site to become another Gamespot/IGN, i don't think it really needs that. The goal for this site should be to become the standard in terms of Videogame sales information (over NPD and the others)

Exactly

I believe the site is perfect as it is. Reviewing will only start trouble and contorversy.

At one time I thought differently, but now I feel vgchartz should stay away from having official reviews and having a dedicated news staff. As time goes by there will be plenty of sites dedicated to reviews/news that will want to partner up. No need to go to all of that trouble in a very crowded market, then end up partnering with someone who is dedicated to reviews/news, then having to drop or adjust(on something that really isn't what vgchartz is about anyways).

More and more I like the idea of vgchartz growing into a Gamefaqs+sales data+social network hybrid. A lot of this stuff is in place already, just needs some nips and tucks here and there.

As it is now, there is Gamefaqs and vgchartz. It just seems like one shouldn't have to go to both sites seperatly, that all of this info(sales data, cheat codes, faqs, easter eggs, screen shot, etc) should be in one place. This place really should be the IMDB of videogames(imho).

Focus on improving the sales data. Don't try to make VGChartz something similar to IGN or Gamespot.

VGChartz shall be known as the most comprehensive videogame charts in the world and not as a videogame site that also has sales data.

I'll 2nd that!

I'll 3rd (?) that.

Stick to what made the site so successful and try to improve on that. Accurate sales data is what will make or break vgchartz and hence focussing on your USP will help make this site grow even more.
