Forums - Website Topics - The future of VG Chartz, what does the site mean to you?

I'm not really sure I understand the whole "kudos" thing, and why it is something that would be needed. I'm pretty much against anything that encourages artificially upping post counts or posts/threads made to simply garner popularity of the user. Maybe I'm misunderstanding, but it just seems like something that would encourage "i agree"/"yes"/"lol" posts and a lot of "scratch my back, i'll scratch yours" kind of behavior and alliances.

As for groups, I really don't see much point in them. I had joined groups on the 1up network, which is a pretty well trafficked site, and it just seemed like the vast majority of them are started and quickly abandoned. This would just take more discussion away from the forums, and that's not a good thing.

I do want to see the "I own this game" thing spruced up a bit. It would be nice to be able to organize it, especially with different options(console, alphabetically, etc).

The game database is something that needs work. Some of the duplicates in there are pretty frustrating. There was to be a better way to nip that in the bud, but i realize it must be overwhelming for the mods having to "ok" each game.

If he doesn't have the data, he can't do it. What do you mean by "update Others and PSP more often?" They are updated weekly like everything and retailes will hardly give daily data for your personal PSP crusade.

Ubuntu. Linux for human beings.

If you are interested in trying Ubuntu or Linux in general, PM me and I will answer your questions and help you install it if you wish.

@ game_boy, psp software does seem to be lacking in Europe, Battelfront II, Renegade Squadron, Pursuit Force Extreme Justice WipEout pulse all lack others data, when they have all been released there (although there are many more)

One of the hardest issues I face is how "mainstream" do we make vgchartz? We could start including more news stories, site reviews, previews and so on - much like IGN / Gamespot and most other videogame sites out there and provide much more content for all the site visitors to read, but would this take away from the core of the site - the sales figures? I want to be careful with how we improve features like the game database, news articles so that we maybe appeal more to casual visitors without alienating our core userbase. What do people think a happy medium would be on this?

One option I am exploring is to set up a vgchartz network. So we form partnerships with other, more typical gaming sites, and share content amongst them. In a way I dislike these networks as they are a little disjointed and I'm not convinced that they "share users" as intended, but maybe it would work better and leave vgchartz as vgchartz? Is a "gaming network" better than a site that tries to do everything (and maybe doesn't do any of it that well)?

A lot has been discussed from our point of view in terms of how to run the site and how to expand for the good of vgchartz but I am interested in your opinions as site users (and maybe as website owners yourselves).

I'm still relatively a noob here, but I do have an opinion about the original inquiry.

First off, I've become a huge fan of VGChartz and use it as a reference any time the need arises. It's amazing what you guys have done here... and anyone can see and has to admit that VGChartz offers legitimate sales data. I've been visiting the site for a few months now and I continue to be amazed by how all the numbers are all within the said margin of error over 95% of the time. Anyone who disses VGChartz in my opinion is either a bitter fanboy who's upset that the numbers aren't where they would like them to be or just someone who has yet to truly observe and give the site a chance.

As for the future of VGChartz... I personally would love for it to stay what it is - the ultimate source of sales data in the videogame industry. I really don't see a need for VGChartz to expand into reviews and previews a la an IGN or Gamespot. However, if there is an interest and demand for reviews and previews, I think it should be provided by affiliate sites. There could be a link to an affiliate site on the main page for reviews and previews or what have you. I like how VGChartz has been handling news, as the stories that are posted are usually somehow relevant to sales performance (or news bits that will somehow impact sales performance in some way).

I'm ramblin', but basically... VGChartz should remain exactly what it is. Expanding is cool (within reason), but I love it how it is right now. I love the numbers and they should remain the central focus. A bit unrelated but I really think the forum personalities are great - how can you not like John Lucas' predictions or Soriku's devotion!? Zucas' great analysis', RolStoppable's wit, and even leo-j has a certain charm to him. (Yes, I don't post much I but most certainly do lurk and read a lot of posts).

Anyways, tha's just my opinion.

What 403 forbidden thing?

It did this for two days and, even now, if I try to connect to vgcharts.org, it comes up as a generic index page.

I would say that vgcharts should expand to be the biggest it can be, sometimes this causes a bad result (ign) but it can help create quite a reliable and diverse site. Id personally like to see the site expand a lot in different directions but only while keeping its core focus, perhaps on less of a user level and more professional while still having user input (btw you never respond to my pm's :p )

As vgcharts gains more partners it will be seen as reliable, as one user said I would imagine partnering with other sites would probably be better then trying to create a ground up one, it just becomes redundant ya know? Maybe have vgcharts statistics plastered on a site or two.

Basically make vgcharts a center of the universe for sites reporting data, ideally. Posting news stories I think should mostly be limited to sales related things though. Like a podcast that can have a staff member or two discussing their opinions on trends and so forth, but keep it sorta fun too, not like an analyst preach session.

I wouldnt mind some gaming site things though, maybe a vgcharts grade scale or some important news stories, I just think if you try to expand the site down the cliche route then it becomes another site but with some sales data too. Its cool how its focused now.

Note: Some games in my collection are no longer owned, but have owned.

Wow. First off ioi, if you keep reading this thread, I have been on this site for over a year now. I went from knowing by screen name the individual personality of nearly every single poster, to barely recognizing some of the names now.

This site has grown significantly and always for the better. Great job.

I would like the site to remain primarily focused on sales. That is why I and I am sure everyone else first came to this site. The hot topic list should also remain a front page icon as that is the reason I joined the site.

However, I would like to see a more in depth forum/news sections. Maybe something similar to IGN where there is a different subpart for each, not each as in each console, but each company. So a Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft sections. Each focusing entirely on their gaming products.

Also, maybe enhance the profile section to have more options. Similar to myspace.

Finally, if you need employees to help build and maintain this site, you don't need to go any further than your forum. There are many of us here, like me, who have extensive backgrounds in programming and web development.

Anywho, agian. Great job, and here's to a fantastic 2008 and beyond!!!

this site could use some more mature mods. ban the people who truly deserve it, not people who disagree with your personal viewpoints. (i won't name any names but it rhymes with boff and vacations in the communist paradise of cuba) I also find incredible inconsistency in what is allowed on the website, certain disgusting and vulgar pictures and words are allowed, intelligent discourse sometimes isn't, again depending on the mod
