"use that money to build the next generation console that will blow people away, bringing your fan base with you"

The problem is that assumes the fanbase is that loyal, and the N64 showed a fanbase will not follow a console if they don't like the direction compared to the console that won them over.

Yes but remember the PS1 came out before N64. All fans were stunned with a brand new console brand AND a real console rocking a CD drive... This will be the opposite. Nintendo will be out first with the bells and whistles this time. All games 1080p and 60fps for the first time. A controller that will do.....um.....whatever it will do for the first time.

What? Gamers did not flock to the CD drive, or to bells and whistles. Third parties flock to those, but gamers flock to games. That's always been the case. The PS1 had better games with more appeal. That was how they beat Nintendo twice in a row. The tables turned this gen, but Nintendo going back to bells and whistles is what alienated gamers two generations in a row.

So acting like they will flock to this system, when history shows the opposite reaction to bells and whistles (games still sold the HD systems, not the HD graphics) just shows the same ignorance of gaming history that Nintendo is showing.

I always come to these threads late, and there's always an opinion to agree with. This one.

Nintendo is brilliant, but in a very different way. They are taking revenge on third parties.

During the seventh generation Nintendo decided to go against cutting edge graphics in order to keep development costs of games down, both in home consoles and handhelds. This was done to benefit the entire gaming industry (minus Sony and Microsoft, of course) and in return Nintendo themselves by getting more and better third party support than in the past. What actually happened is that third parties for the most part used the DS and Wii to cash in and then funneled those profits into projects for the HD consoles, because those expensive games couldn't sustain themselves. Sure, there have been numerous hit games on the 360 and PS3, but for the longest time they couldn't cover the losses of all the failures (and there were plenty on the HD consoles).

So what is Nintendo's reaction? They put out eighth generation systems that don't sell to the mainstream and up the development costs. Now when the next round of gaming machines is available third parties won't have a safety net. Nintendo has proven in the past that they can operate a profitable business even if their hardware sales are less than good. Third parties haven't, so most likely one after another of them will go down in flames, unless they find a way to nickel and dime the "hardcore" enough to make up for all their expenses.

I've been thinking if Nintendo isn't giving 3rd parties wood to burn themselves with. Your post makes me wonder if Nintendo is bracing itself for an industry crash after the Wii failed to get 3rd parties' full support...

One very important factor is that Nintendo has a much easier time making profit on games, since they don't have to pay licensing fees to themselves...

And as i said if Cafe will be so technologicaly inferior to  PS4/X3 like Wii was to PS3/X360

You are most likely wrong. Here are reasons why:

1- There are strong indications that Nintendo is going for a reasonably powerful system by today's standards (unlike they did with the Wii).

2- The next Playstation / Xbox will probably come out just a year after Project Cafe, that's not enough to make hardware much more powerful.

3- During the ongoing console generation, Sony and Microsoft learned that they can't launch a system with high-end components and still expect to make a profit. So it's quite likely that PS4/X3's hardware will cost almost the same to make as Cafe's.

It's likely that Sony/MS's next consoles will be more powerful than Nintendo's, but with similar production cost and just a 1-year technological advantage the difference shouldn't be anywhere near Wii vs PS3/360.

If I am wrong, that will either be because the ongoing rumors about Cafe are very wrong, or because Sony and Microsoft would shoot themselves in the foot again with expensive hardware.

This.

And even if the hardware is half as capable as the PS4/NextX, the fact that the resolutions will be on par, the shader support will be there, and the architecture is similar means that support will be far greater for multiplatform titles than it was with Wii.

Worst case scenario is that people decide to port ps3/360 games to the cafe, making its library extremely similar to the competition, and no one decides to upgrade because 3rd parties are unwilling to put effort into using the wii2 to its full potential/the better version. It simply becomes a port machine. Then ps4/xbox 3 come around offering better graphics and such. 3rd parties jump onto these consoles and the wii 2 gets dumbed down ports like the wii. After the gen is over, we realize that the only people who actually used the wii 2 to its full potential was nintendo...

This is off topic, but I think the xbox 3 will win next gen only because of weak competition. It may be too early, but remember this either so you can laugh at me in the future, or so you can praise my random guess that happened to be correct...

1,As i said again "If it will be" inferior not "it will be".If they will put GPU more powerful than GTX 580 than it will be whole other story.but i don't believe they will make high-end console with controlers containing HD Touch screen cause it would blow the price through the roof.

2.yes if Cafe will be powerful for 2012 standards and not 2007 standards(like Wii and specifications from 5 year back)

3.Sony have to go high end.that's their reputation as company and they are beeing recognized as a high end stuff company. But they will never spend 2 bilions $ again to develop their own CPU or GPU they will just go for high end 3rd party CPU and GPU.MS was profitable on hardware from day one and X360 have very similiar power as PS3.

So it depends on Nintendo and it's Cafe.If Nintendo will go high end than they will be on par with PS4/X3.If not they will have problem.even if they will have 2 problems:

1.they do not have exclusives for gamers who play GOW,GT,Halo,Forza,Killzone etc.

2.for 3rd parties it's better to make games for 130mln(as of Cafe start) audiance(PS3 and X360 combined)

than for 2mln audiance of Cafe so it will have difficult first year and the kickstart won't give them nothing.

They wouldn't need to dumb down ports. Look at PC games, the same game easily runs on graphics cards which are 4 or 8 times as powerful as their minimum requirements, just by adding a few effects, increase texture detail a bit and improving anti-aliasing.

As Viper1 said, as long as the architectures are reasonably similar ports will be easy to make without really changing the games. Will the graphics be slightly worse? Yes... but most people wouldn't notice.

I didn't see any "if" in your first post of this thread but apologies if I misunderstood anything.

As for Sony's reputation being for "high end" stuff, that's not really true. PS1 and PS2 anyone?

1. Nobody will be putting a GTX 580 (or similar GPU) into their consoles.  They cost more than the entire consoles just by themselves.

3. MS did not profit on X360 hardware from day 1.
