I know a bunch of Sony fanboy's are probably gonna want to butcher me now, but I had MGS 2 for my Xbox and personally I thought Splinter Cell was better. Now am I the only person on this whole site who think Splinter Cell: Conviction will be better than MGS 4.(There will probably be a few yes's). No but seriously I think people don't ever give the Splinter Cell series the credit it deserves. It was the first REAL stealth game and sadly the sales are never as good as they should be.

"First real stealth game"? Sorry, but Splinter Cell didn't come out until 2002. Even if you ignore Castle Wolfenstein, the original Metal Gear came out in 1987, some 15 years earlier.

Stuff like Thief, Tenchu, Deus Ex, and both MGS 1 & 2 also predate Splinter Cell.

EDIT:  I guess Played_Out beat me to it.  Curses, foiled again!

No one can deny that Splinter Cell revolutionised the stealth genre. I mean lockpickin, shooting out lights to remain hidden, the way you could knock people out and have to HIDE bodies I mean come on that took being hidden to just a hole new level. The only part of Splinter Cell I ever found annoying is the fact that no one ever noticed three lights floating around in mid-air. With MGS 2 I always felt that the stealth aspect was slightly half-baked. I mean those boss fights they had with the firing rockets at them huge robots was just to unrealistic. Plus for me on hard difficulty I alway's felt that the experience was brilliant. The game was never lenient put it wasn't impossible to complete either.

Maybe some people felt that SC was a bit too realistic and just get impatient, fair enough if that's how you feel.

MGS baby... all the way... MGS is more than Stealth, More than realism, it has the best Fantasy, and intriguing storyline. Come on! the Character names alone rock.. Snake, Big Boss and Now Big Mama :P

Well I have a great dislike of both series though I found MGS somewhat more playable. Despite my obvious bias towards MGS I highly doubt any game in the same genre as MGS4 will match it. Then again I'm basing that entirely off of development budget and hype. Given that it was thought Halo 3 was going to blow away every other FPS on the 360 and not merely be the 4th best 360 FPS of 2007 those may not be the most reliable indicators.

I dont see Splinter Cell as being the first real spy game in comparison to say, Syphon Filter. MGS is in a completely different league where its entirely unique for the espionage genre.

MGS series is the god father who started the trend, which allows only few selectively succesfull games to copy the formula; Splinter Cell and Syphon Filter.

I have a personal preference on Syphon Filter over Splinter Cell. I played all the PSX based Syphon Filter games, and really wanted to get into Splinter cell. I just couldn't, with that said Im really looking forward to Syphon Filter on the PS3.

I hope xbox 360 owners will have a good time with SC:Conviction though. I geuss Microsoft had to get a spy oriented game to fill that void when Metal Gear Solid 4 comes around.

Theif and Hitman have had both for over a decade, they certainly were not original.

The only original thing that splinter cell had over its stealth rivals, as far as I'm aware, were the 3 different vision modes (normal, night and heat) .

i've always preferred Splinter Cell over MGS...MGS to me has always been a bit too "fantasy"/"manga-style". BTW i'm really looking forward for the new SC instalment: i like the idea of Sam Fisher becoming a sort of fugitive...very movie-like!

2008 year end sales (made in January 2008):

44.2 M 27.1 M 20.8 M

u compared mgs2 (last gen product, not even the improved mgs3) to conviction? (on current gen 360)? haha wait till mgs4 is released then you can make a fair judgement.
personally i think mgs series has better developed characters, deeper stories, greater created atmosphere....and i think mgs4 will be a milestone for graphics as well.
though i think splinter cell is not a bad game either.
ps: syphon filter is too simple, just keep shooting! mgs:PO is a much more deeper game.

Metal Gear Solid series

I was never a fan of Splinter Cell, just for the simple fact, the story was no where near as deep as Metal Gear Solid.

Sam Fisher is not a awesome character when you compare him to Solid Snake. Graphics-wise the games are similar but Hideo Kojima puts more details in his games, as seem with all Metal Gear games in the past.

Splinter Cell is to serious compared to the hilarious comments Hideo Kojima puts in his games.

Metal Gear Solid all the way, I would rather have Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of Patriots.

Metal Gear Solid is one of my favourite games of all time, with perhaps the strongest and most intelligent storyline. As such I prefer the MGS series over SC.

That said, I can honestly say I have rarely been blown away by a game as much as I was when I first played Splinter Cell on the Xbox. The lighting was simply extraordinary and literally left me in awe.

I like both series because they add different things to the genre. I love the storytelling and characters in MGS, whereas I love the realism and perfect gameplay of the SC series.
