I dont see Splinter Cell as being the first real spy game in comparison to say, Syphon Filter. MGS is in a completely different league where its entirely unique for the espionage genre.
MGS series is the god father who started the trend, which allows only few selectively succesfull games to copy the formula; Splinter Cell and Syphon Filter.
I have a personal preference on Syphon Filter over Splinter Cell. I played all the PSX based Syphon Filter games, and really wanted to get into Splinter cell. I just couldn't, with that said Im really looking forward to Syphon Filter on the PS3.
I hope xbox 360 owners will have a good time with SC:Conviction though. I geuss Microsoft had to get a spy oriented game to fill that void when Metal Gear Solid 4 comes around.
