Forums - Sony - Report: Sony working with IBM in new Cell processor

This link has some comedic quotes from him, including this one about the Cell:

The model image for the Cell-based network may be the Internet: servers around the world form one virtual 'computer,' and each PC accesses it. Application programs can no longer directly access the hardware; instead they will have to be written in high-level, object-oriented language. The Cell processor will completely change the concept of programming. I am sure that a technology revolution is about to occur, not only within Sony but throughout the digital consumer electronics industry.”

PErhaps his vision will finally be achieved with this new CELL and the PS4!

two ps3 duct taped is pure genius... is going to be powerful enough and will be cheaper to build... just upgrade the GPU and put 8X the RAM ps3 had...

i was going to say something similar, they only need to tweak it here and there, increase ram and gpu

Add another cell = add 60-80 Watt power usage

Add more ram = add 10-20 Watt power usage

Add better GPU = add 20-60 Watt power usage

End result: PS4 meltdown

Look people, consoles are limited by three constraints: size, price, power usage (which is limited by the first two factors). Otherwise they would be called gaming PCs. Any new console will never achieve the performance of a (good) gaming PC. Sure everyone can dream up a PS4 with a multicore-32SPU cell - not going to happen.

kazunori yamauchi will be dissapointed with this....he expected quad-cell.

consoles are just more efficiently designed since their standardised.

PC's have thousands of different combinations of parts so they just use a single size (ok theres a couple of different ones but not that many). that means even if you have onboard graphics your pc may still be the same size as someone with a top of the range GPU.

standardisation = efficiency

PS3 Slim already use only 100 watt running a game... this new CPU is 32nm instead of 45nm of the PS3 slin CPU... GPUs are now around 40nm instead of the 65nm in PS3 slim... this and they might use less Mhz now to produce less heat and consume less energy. Ram are also much faster and power friendly... i could see all the specs i told using less than 180W, less than PS3 FAT...

Isn't the GPU more important than the CPU for interactive video output? Why is the main attention being put on the CPU? (I'm just asking an honest question)

i wish i new but if the GPU is for video output then i'd think Sony would be working on that to.

sidenote: i have no idea wht andbody in this thread is talking about?
