Source: http://www.officialnintendomagazine.co.uk/26544/news/shinobi-3ds-confirmed/

Shinobi will be making a return to Nintendo 3DS. Yes, Shinobi is one of two Sega games to be confirmed in the latest issue of Nintendo Power.

While Sonic Generations 3DS is the cover game, Shinobi is listed as a classic revival. This reveal comes a day news leaked that a Shinobi game could be in the works for 3DS.

So for those who have never played a Shinobi game before, what's it all about? Well, you can find out by downloading the original arcade game now on Virtual Console.

Shinobi (Arcade edition)

Originally released in 1987, it starred a ninja named Joe Musashi who has to stop a criminal organization called Zeed.

They're kidnapping the children of the Oboro clan and so Musashi must make his way to Zeed's headquarters and free all the hostages before confronting Zeed's leaders who are known as Ring of Five.

Joe can use shuriken to take out enemies from distance as he runs and jumps around the five stages. He can also punch and kick and use ninja magic.

Shinobi was revived in 2002 for PlayStation 2 and was followed up by Nightshade in 2004. So, if it were to be released this year, Shinobi 3DS will be the first game in the series for seven years.

Have you played a Shinobi game before? Are you looking forward to this 3DS version?

I played my cousin's copy of the Revenge of Shinobi so much when I was around about 9 or 10.  If this is good, this will be can almost certain purchase by me.

I'll probably pick this up. I have fond memories of Shinobi from the PS2 era.

Shinobi was a cool game on the PS2.

Rockstar: Announce Bully 2 already and make gamers proud!

Kojima: Come out with Project S already!

Although already here, Shinobi needs its own thread. Don't know about the PS2 since I played the 16 bit Shinobi. Here's a trailer (from the fast peeps at NL), they say it's not a new Shinobi game, but a compilation of seven classic Shinobi games re-imagined for the 3DS, like some depth for those Shinobi level back drops. Is this the Revival metioned in Nintendo Power? Maybe this is just the introduction of the trailer, with the new 3DS footage part cut off :P

inb4sonic, its not Revenge of Shinobi.

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

Unfortunately, it turns out that it isn't a new Shinobi game, but a compilation of previous ones.

It seems like only yesterday that we learnt that Sega and Griptonite were working on a Shinobi game for the 3DS. Time moves fast on the interwebs however, and thanks to arecently leaked trailer it now seems that this is not a newShinobi game, but a compilation of seven classic Shinobi games from yesteryear.

The trailer below shows the following Shinobi games and closes with the statement "lovingly reimagined for 3DS":

Several of these games are already available on the Wii Virtual Console, but it’s great to see the Saturn and PlayStation 2 Shinobi games get a look in to add a bit of variety to the bundle.

There are a few notable exceptions from the Shinobi canon such as the lacklustre Cyber Shinobi on the Master System and the rather nifty GG Shinobi (the first Game Gear Shinobi game) which is already confirmed as a download on the 3DS Virtual Console service. The less said about the Gameboy Advance Revenge of Shinobi game the better!

SEGA has responded to the video with "no comment" but has confirmed we'll find out more information later this week.

Here's the leaked trailer so you can see for yourself:

Would you prefer a brand new Shinobi game for the 3DS or would you be happy with a compilation? As always, let your thoughts be known below.

7 games is a lot, but I would still have much prefered a new Shinobi game

oooh now THIS is a game I would love to play 0_0 (Shinobi) hope they makes a NGP version too down the road if not will def buy it once I get a 3DS (few years down the road)

I am definitely excited for this, Shinobi III is one of my favorite genesis games, and the ps2 game was great as well

I'd prefer a new, original Shinobi game, but it'd be hard to say no to a collection on the 3DS.  Although, I have trouble imagining how they're going to fit both a Saturn game and a PS2 game onto that tiny 3DS card.  The other Master System & Genesis games wouldn't be a problem.
