Forums - Sales - Eurogamer: Wii still over PS2 in sales

Well there's no doubt it'll pass the PS1 but passing the PS2 is kinda pushing it. Unless it gets a redesign I doubt it'll happen.

Can anyone quote me where i said it is the greatest console because of the units sold ?

"But even seeing the Wii knock at the PS2's door is absolutly amazing, thats what makes it.....in my opinion.....the greatest console ever made."

You are directly referring to sales as the reason why, in your opinion, the Wii is the greatest console ever made.

I rest my case =).

He said "in my opinion" and he didn't say anything about units sold...it's all about his personal choice.LOL

1) The PS2 was the 1st, 6th Generation Console to be released. It had a Year and 1 Month sales lead on either Xbox or the GameCube. The PS2 had absolutly no competition againt it. Thats one reason why it's numbers are so high.

Poor Dreamcast. No-one gives it the respect it deserves.

lol good one

Ya because the Dreamcast deserves soooo much respect

I love how people just don't give the Wii the respect it deserves. Here are a few facts that people completly over look.

1) The PS2 was the 1st, 6th Generation Console to be released. It had a Year and 1 Month sales lead on either Xbox or the GameCube. The PS2 had absolutly no competition againt it. Thats one reason why it's numbers are so high.

2) The Wii on the other hand was released at the same time as the PS3, 1 Year after the 360. We are talking about a Console that was way behind in technology, and had 2 current Generation Consoles to contend with. And was still able to outsell them. Theres no wonder the Wii cant catch up to the PS2 sales, the PS2 had a massive advantage. But even seeing the Wii knock at the PS2's door is absolutly amazing, thats what makes it.....in my opinion.....the greatest console ever made.

Sales does not make it the greatest console ever made.

The Wii is only so popular because it's target audience ISN'T the typical hardcore gamer.

While I do think it is underrated by hardcore gamers because they say "it's just a kids console", it still doesn't deserve the sales just because it's the latest trendy Christmas present.

Partly false, its market doesn't have have typical hardcore gamers, because 3rd parties chose to not bring those games over.

Had the first years of the Wii been given the same 3rd party games with only losses to HD visuals, Wii would gained the core gamer as well.

However, 3rd parties were short sighted in the beginning and then decided to not spend the money to make their engines Wii friendly as they were comfortable with PS360/PC userbase and created their own self-fulling logic of who the Wii market was and was not.

you're making the assuption that "hardcore gamers" would give up the graphics, a control scheme more suited to some types of games, superior online support etc... in my opnion your assuption is wrong

Dude what have you been reading ? I never said PS2 sales don't count. I said the reason the Wii wont catch up is because PS2 had no competition.

And i never said sales made it the greatest console.

Read a little slower, and understand what i am writing !

You clearly cited the Wii approaching the PS2 in sales as the reason for it being 'the greatest console ever made'.  There was no mention of games, motion controls, etc.  The only reasoning you gave was it coming close to the PS2 in sales.

You also continually touted that the only reason the PS2 sold as much as it did was because it had no competition.  If you think the Wii is knocking at its door being 64 million units away, then clearly you feel the PS2 achievements do not count.  When someone gave a reason for the Wii having high sales, you just dismissed them as a hater.  If the Wii had received all the PS360 third party support, I highly doubt you would be here saying the Wii only sold so well because it had no competition.

Why are some people getting so mad, all i did was give my own personal opinion. Isn't everyone entitled to their own.

well actually it does, right off the top of my head :

it was the first console to incorporate a successful online system

it had a great library of games and started some of the most popular franchises in gaming like soul calibur

ironically the idea of incorporating a screen into the controller started on this console, if the rumours are true you can thank sega for having their idea built upon by nintendo ( like atari with the le stick the first console motion control )

You would make a horrible Lawyer. WHERE DID I WRITE SALES ?

You wrote sales earlier on in your comment, which I didn't quote. In the part that I quoted, you were either implying that the Wii is the greatest console ever made because of sales, or you genuinely believe that the Wii will sprout legs and walk up to a house where a PS2 lives and knock on its door.

When you said "Wii knock at the PS2's door" you were clearly referring to sales, you went on to say "thats what makes it.....in my opinion.....the greatest console ever made". In other words, the Wii is the greatest console ever made BECAUSE of sales.

Don't treat me like an idiot.

Well I'm pretty sure everyone wouldn't be calling Uncharted/Crysis etx the games of the year if not for the graphics. LOL
