Wii Sports is now possibly the biggest franchise ever created so I think it's safe to say it is highly unlikely  that the next Nintendo console's primary controller won't be designed with it in mind. This would be incredibly stupid and risky. Pretty much all the mock-up we have seen seem to be based on the concept of a classic controller but I think it's totally possible to just add more buttons and sticks to the wiimote because the first one was already extremely small and light. This could be the perfect way to have a more competent classic controller in "NES"-style while still giving the opportunity to use motion controls. This seems like the more logical step really.

I do think a screen on the controller is possible- Nintendo has tried it before, but not seen any real success due to the need for a portable system per player, AND the link cables. But it won't be the main focus; I think the IGN mockup is more likely than the OP. But I don't really see either as good options, as motion is too hard to do with either of them. The motion, especially for backwards-compatibility with the Wii, will be the toughest part.

Personally I don't think the new Cafe screen-controller will be used to replicate Wii motion.  Instead, I think you'll have to use your Wii remotes for backward compatibility on Cafe, just like you needed your Gamecube controllers for BC on the Wii.

I believe the contoller/screen is their new idea, with motion/pointer being supported with a separate controller.

I've been thinking along this line too, that whatever the Cafe's main controller is it will still use the wiimoteplus as its version of the now somewhat standard "motion wand" controller.

Only thing about that is the constant loss of calibration, an issue I was hoping would be fixed when the next Nintendo console launched.

Same here.  It'd be really great if perhaps there was a new, improved motion controller introduced with Cafe, but yeah, I don't see it being the rumored "screen controller".  It just doesn't seem practical to have a one-handed motion/pointer controller with a large, six inch screen on it...

or maybe Ninty just might abandon the whole motion thing?? or at least put it on the backburner

I still wouldn't be surprised if the screen-based cafe controller (if it exists) was just a shell for their next generation Wiimote ...

In the current generation, Nintendo received a lot of success from games using add-ons and controller shells and I would expect that Nintendo might focus on making a controller that was better suited to that. Hypothetically speaking, it could have a built in processor and memory (making it in the range of something like the Nintendo DS) and more advanced communication ability making it possible to make very advanced add-ons at a low cost. The screen based controller shell could just be the first of these add-ons, and could be bundled with the system from day one.

I am not sure what to think about that controller concept from a design standpoint.

When I game on a console I look at the T.V., not my hands. When I use dual analog sticks, D-pad, face buttons, and shoulder buttons, How am I supposed to use a touch screen at the same time? It just does not make sense,

...They should have added a touchpad on the back so it does not interfere with the other controls; the controller screen... I just don't understand seems like extra cost to the controller that interferes with viewing focus on the T.V. its like a huge DS that requires you to move your head up and down constantly while playing.

Nintendo has some serious explaining to do...

I've been thinking it over and its starting to come slightly into focus.  For one I think I was wrong about a prominent secondary screen being cumbersome.  Sounds silly but I sat here and pretended to play cafe, looking back and forth from between my hands to the tv (I was never fortunate enough to play the GC GBA back in the day)  and it actually feels completely natural imo.  course it was just pretend so...

Also I got to thinking about how many ideas R&D had for the GC GBA that never got a chance to grow due to the ill fated cube.  Nintendo thought it was going to be big business originally.  It may just have been before its time what with those horrid cables and high cost.

That said I'm still skeptical of this side step away from motion controls, its not anything like what I was expecting a couple months ago.  If it turns out true I hope we at least get a "cafe Sports" moteplus bundle at launch to set the proper precident.
