I still wouldn't be surprised if the screen-based cafe controller (if it exists) was just a shell for their next generation Wiimote ...
In the current generation, Nintendo received a lot of success from games using add-ons and controller shells and I would expect that Nintendo might focus on making a controller that was better suited to that. Hypothetically speaking, it could have a built in processor and memory (making it in the range of something like the Nintendo DS) and more advanced communication ability making it possible to make very advanced add-ons at a low cost. The screen based controller shell could just be the first of these add-ons, and could be bundled with the system from day one.
