Forums - Sony Discussion - PS3 has outsold the 360 WW (from equal launch)

http://vgchartz.com/hwlaunch.php?cons1=Wii&reg1=All&cons2=PS3&reg2=All&cons3=X360&reg3=All&weeks=156

The PS3 has sold more in one year than the 360 did in its first year
Does this show good things for the PS3's future? It has a gd linup next year 9as long as they are all released)

We all know this

Like leo said, this is common knowledge. What's more important is to realize that if the PS3 continues to sell as well or slightly better than the 360, the 360 will have the lead for a long time, but the gap in market share will lessen.

Nothing mind-blowing.

My End of 2008 Hardware Predictions (console only):

Wii : 50 million

360: 28 million

PS3: 24 million

These predictions were made on January 3rd and won't be revised

yeah , this was expected .... now it all comes down to the 2nd year ... I really hope that the PS3 will reach 10 million + next year :)

Vote the Mayor for Mayor!

It helps to examine the details as well. The PS3 sales is less an implicaton of it's own strength than the 360's weakness. The PS3 had a boost because of 1 or 2 (depending on your interpretation) panicked price cuts and system redesigns, while the 360 held at the same price point for over 18 months. Moreover, the 360 simply cannot get off the ground in Japan, which is a problem that will hobble Microsoft's efforts to become the industry leader.

At the moment the PS3 sappears to be more closely tracking the GameCube and XBox sales (though slightly ahead). Given where those consoles ended up this might be cause for despair, if not for the fact that the PS3 still costs more than twice as much as those consoles did and thus likely has more room to improve through future price cuts.

Awesome, now I see what Smashchu was talking about.

Some members are constantly making PS3 threads "PS3 is doing fine or PS3 did better". Everyone we clearly understand the state of the PS3, there is no need to keep making threads on the PS3's current state now.

Not really. The launch numbers don't take into account the 360's hardware drought which was at least 6 months after launch in the U.S. With the exception of the Wii, you can't sell what's not on the shelves. And 2 weeks after launch, though Sony didn't believe it, and offered folks what $1,000 to find one on shelves - HA HA!

Yeah, the PS3 is selling better, but fact of the matter is - the PS3 has been readily available 2 weeks after launch. The 360 hasn't been readily available.

And one other thing - my friend who wanted a 60gb PS3 with BC settled for a 40gb PS3. He said he wanted a BR player and it was a PS, so why not? I'll keep you posted if he or his son actually buy games for it, because they'll have to buy games or just download demos off PSN.

What I found the funniest is - he was asking me why it was called Blu Ray in the first place.

So you think that the people who wanted a 360 during the "drought" didn't get around to buying one the whole next year? Or even the next year.

Thats funny. You're a funny person.

It has outsold the XBOX yes. But remember that statistically the 2 sold essentially the same amount during the launch year. It also took a few tries for Sony to do so.

1 It had 2 fire sales one for the 20GB which sold for as low as 369 at the end. the other for the 60GB version at 499 and retaielrs were adding in incentives like Circuit Citiy's free controller Deal.
2. A complete change in SKUs with the 80GB coming with a Free game and being introduced at a higher price to have a "price drop" once the 60GB fire sale was out of the way.
3. The key introduction of a 40GB version and in Japan a new color that is 399 just weeks before the holiday sales. this has the effect of the tail end of the price cuts sales spiek being masked by the holiday sales.

the XBOX has had
1. a 50 dollar price cut
2. Halo 3s release.

I do expect sales of the PS3 to drop back down to 10K-20K in Japan and in the US to hover around 170K a month or so. I expect the 360 to sell better in the UK while the PS3 will still seel best in Spain and Italy.

Though the PS3 has sold better than antcipated it still has to show it can do more than sales spikes.

Selling slightly more that the Xbox 360 in its first year is not that great of an achievement. The Wii managed to outsell the first TWO years of the 360 in its first year.

Congrats to the PS3 for not falling further behind the 360 this generation. It if ever hopes to catch up to, or pass the 360 this generation, it will need to outsell the 360's second year by at least 3-4 million units. With the list of big titles coming out next year and its current momentum, it has a chance.
