Forums - Gaming - So what do you guys think of L.A. Noire?

I'm not that interested in shooters (openworld or not. Though I did enjoy Crackdown) so my interest in this game was pretty much zero. But then I saw that one of the youtube users I follow uploaded a LA Noire Let's Play so I checked it out. The game seems to be based primarily on detective work with some action sequences (some of which require shooting). So there's a good chance I may like it. Added it to my rental queue yesterday. Probably won't get a chance to play it for awhile since with my rental service it's pretty much impossible to get a popular game sent to you soon after release unless you reserved the rental a few days in advance at least (which I didn't because I thought this would just be 1920s GTA and I dont like GTA.)

1940s GTA. It's after the war

And it's nothing like GTA, if you don't want it to be. People compain about the open world, what about GTA? Aside from the odd side mission (not even in the early ones) and choice of mission you have, there's nothing but collectibles and the maps are a lot smaller. And only in San Andreas can you fly planes. It's nice to do Taxi and stuff, but you couldn't even do that in GTA IV. People moan for the sake of it. It's a good game, but not for everyone.

Here lies the dearly departed Nintendomination Thread.

Ok how are you all already near the end of the game it came out 4 or 5 days ago?

It doesn't take that long to beat it (17-22 hours depending on how much extra you do).

Wow i don't think 17-22 hours is worth the 60 price tag i mean i was thinking it was around 30-35 hours at least i don't know i might get it still.

Yet you are hyped for Mass Effect, because Mass Effect isn't a long game. (Given I beat Witcher 2 in 4 days, about 30-40 hours worth (Steam says 60, but it might because I left the client running)).

But apparently Mass Effect actually has real side missions in the game that makes it longer. What does LA Noire have exactly? I mean even a 20 hour game should last longer than 4 or 5 days unless you just play the hell out of a game when it comes out which A. Means you have no life and B. you don't have a job/C. you call in sick just to pick up a game. Not saying that is what you do but you must do something to beat it that quickly.

LA Noire is easily one of the best games I've played this generation and definitely the freshest.  I think many try to explain it as a cross between certain things, but I really don't see it that way at all.  Sure it has elements of others, but this is truly a game all its owns.  The detective work and interrogations are simply amazing.  The motion scan technology really does a fantastic job allowing this game to be the ONLY game that can have a system to determine the truth of a statement in a game.  Without it, it would not have worked.  Gameplay is solid and the story is simply phenomenal.  Like RDR, it has to be one of the most thought out and well-developed story I've played ever.  Everything is important and contributes reasonably to the large picture.  Tie that in with some of the most real and well-crafted characters along with a beautifully created city, and the game just comes to life.

My only complaints for the game is that the city is extremely large with not too much to do in it.  Should have included more freedom in the open world and more real-time events and challenges.  Also some control issues, although the usual for 3rd person games.  Took me about 20-25 hours to beat and about 40-45 hours to 100% (yes I got 100%).  Just a fantastic experience, and as of now is my favorite game so far this year.

its really good so far but im to scared to play it for longer then 2 hrs straight cause of the whole YLOD situation

I wouldn't worry about it. The incidents are isolated, they only affect older versions (like mine) and I left it on for 4 hours with no issue. I went out in the middle, alright?

OT: I'm really enjoying it, though it is rather...graphic, let's say. I'm fine with it, but the first time I did a homocide case I was pretty shocked and disturbed by seeing this naked lady on the ground with a battered head and markings on her chest. It was weird

However, even including that, I'm really liking it. And, for those worried about length- if you want to just finish it and aren't worried about all the secrets, clues, right answers etc. it can be done in around 12 hours. If you want to do everything, get everything right (like me) you're looking more at 30-35. It depends on what type of gamer you are.

My kid was playing L.A. Noire.  "Was" playing L.A. Noire.  Not anymore.

Cole Phelps: "I'm sorry I have to tell you this.....your mother is dead."

Little girl: "Mom?" *starts crying*

Cole Phelps: "Mind if I ask you some questions?"

What the fuck!?  Phelps may be a good investigator but he has absolutely no people skills!!

Awful game, the open world is totally wasted, the crime solving is pretty much impossible to fail out, you can miss most major clues, just doubt all answers and still close the cases.

There should be no sense of achievmeent solving anything, because really all you achieve is being spoon fed progression through a case.  Over and over.

It's true though. You can't really fail in this game, and there's no penalty for bombing cases. The game basically revolves around interrogating and investigating, but you can beat the game without paying attention to them. It's a huge design flaw.

I agree. A branching storyline that's affected by your success/failure in a case would've made the game a lot better. This game was poorly executed. And I'm kinda surprised reviewers didn't complain about the amount of time it took to develop like they were with GT5 and Final Fantasy 13. Hmm, maybe because they weren't produced by an American company.
