Forums - Gaming - Besides optimization to a platform, why care about exclusivity?

I'll use Assassin's Creed as an example.  Imagine if this game were exclusive to the PS3 in the exact same form that it was released in.  Don't change a single thing.  It would be used as fodder against the 360 at any given opportunity.  The exact same game, mind you, but people would swear on their grandmother's soul that it was too much for the 360 to handle.  Who could argue?  I mean, the 360 version wouldn't exist to prove the comparable power of the 360 and PS3.

But the 360 version does exist.  The 360 version of a lot of games exists--and sometimes, that version is the better version.  You STILL have people saying that the 360 version held the other version down--often with as much proof as I have here proving the opposite (which is absolutely none at all).  The basis for this, in my opinion, is an absolute NEED to have superiority over the competition.  I don't get it.

Imagine a world where a game like Mass Effect 2, Bioshock, or Ninja Gaiden--games that were once exclusive to the 360 were originally on the PS3.  Imagine the amount of rage there would be if they were ported to the competition--after development for the PS3 version was totally complete.  None, you say?  If Konami said MGS4 was being ported to the 360 a full three years after the PS3 version, PS3 fans would say that it somehow hurt the quality of the older version!    Where does this come from?

I've played and enjoyed games like Little Big Planet, Uncharted 2, and God of War 3 on my PS3.  If I were solely a PS3 owner, I'd be glad for my friends on Xbox 360 to have a chance to play the game.  When ME2 was released for the PS3, I was happy that PS3 owners could finally see what 360 gamers were clamoring about, all along.  Nobody shared my sentiments.  Suddenly, ME2 was "shit compared to ME1 which is only on 360".  ME2 "didn't hold a candle to the PS3 exclusives".  All of this hate because suddenly the game was available to a new audience.  Sometimes, fanboys make me sick.

Look, I personally don't see the point in exclusivity.  I don't get a sense of joy when the Blu Ray version of Avatar (just an example) isn't available to DVD owners.  I'm glad they can see how shitty avatar is without the 3D!  I don't get any pleasure talking to my PS3 owning friends at work about some call of Duty Map Pack that they don't have yet.  I wish they could join in the conversation.  I don't see the huge technical leap between a game like Uncharted 2 and Batman AA.  The PS3 and 360 are about the same to the average person.  I think a comparable version of God of War 3 could be produced on the 360.

So, I posted all of that just to say this:  The only reason people care about exclusivity is pride.

Didn't they dumb down the AI to put it on 360, I mean they were bragging about the AI until they annouced AC a multiplat and then they stopped and the AI was crappy when it came out...

It makes your E-peen harder if you own the platform, otherwise it just incites rage in you as you say how much it sucks and your console of choice exclusives are better

In all seriousness it's better in a few ways, you've got optimization, able to design around the platforms unique aspects like Wii Remote, Wii Motion Plus, Balance Board, Kinect, Move, and Sixaxis.  When games are designed from the ground up knowing these restrictions generally the final product is much nicer. Plus every first party seems to be more than willing to help you with your game if you make it exclusive.

Hope this helps a bit, though in most cases being a multiplat doesn't change much other than the graphical fidelity.

I need clarification. When you say platforms do you just mean pertaining to the consoles, or do you include the PC as well. I can probably write a 2 page paper as to why all FPS, Strategy, and RPGs should only be made for the PC over any console that doesn't support as many keys as a keyboard and/or the fast reponse of a mouse, PLUS the ability to plug in and use other controllers/peripherals.

Edit: Forgot to mentoin decentralized online inthere. You can just look at PSN to see exactly why.

as a nintendo only console/portables owner (XD) I say identity... I know there are a lot of good games on other consoles but I dont really like the PS3/360, I have a gaming PC (mostly for RTS) and a psp (MH) too, but other that that I dont fell like sony or microsoft cannt provide me the kind of games I like. I am not trying to be a fanboy, but I only go with nintendo and I feel happy with my choice.

Exclusivity matters only when there is a meaningful difference in the platforms a game is exclusive from. The Xbox 360 and PS3 do not have any meaningful differences for your stock standard analogue controller type games. They are called HD twins for a reason people...

why else does it matter to me as a consumer? if there is a multyplayer element and I have friends who have multiple systems but only buy a copy for the system I don't have I can't play with that person.  While if it is only on one system and it is one that I have I can play online with them. So not a very large reason but something.

Never heard anyone use that term before, ps3 obviously has a better library and people in the real world realize that and  thats why ps3 is selling the most

The PS3 is on the last place and never sold the most, I think your "real world" is an other one as all the other people share.

In my opinion exclusives do have their value. Each console has its own fanbase and the developers have to take care of the individual constumer segments. The first party games are often some sort of measure for the third party games, at least when it comes down to reviews...

Maybe Final Fantasy 13  would have gotten better reviews as PS3 exclusive in the US/UK? While it got very good reviews in continental Europe/Japan where WRPGS and the Xbox are considerably weaker saleswise it was heavily critizised in the US/UK. FF13 was maybe simply reviewed with games like Oblivion or WRPGs traits in mind although it followed a totally different approach (like actually telling a compelling story... not only a shallow main quests with hundreds of sidequests. But enough of that. I somehow simply can not enjoy WRPGs and don't want to upset people wo do). What I mean is that a certain game may get different reactions/reviews on the various platforms because it has different exclusive games to be compared with.

Little Big Planet possibly would have been a different game if it were developped for PS3 and Wii in mind, since it would have had to compete with Mario, Kirby or Donkey Kong Country on the Wii... at least in the minds of the reviewers which often have an influence on the public opinion.

So if I assume that developers are trying to get good reviews they might have different views on what average PS3/Xbox360/Wii Gamers want... So the game might be adjusted to the userbase/fanbase as well, not only to the technical/graphical possibilities of a certain console.

Maybe it's less important for X360 but after early wave of bad ports for PS3 exclusivity is like a sign of quality for PS3 gamers.
