Forums - Gaming - Remedy boss: “The sooner we go digital, the better”

I can't wait until every game is £45 on release or whatever other ludicrous prices we've seen with games released on online stores at launch...

Except for COD. That'd be £100, and you'd have a £35 map pack (I say pack, it'd just be one map) released within 24 hours.

Such arrogance, he makes it sound as though we're at fault for not buying his game! Boxed games have so many advantages over downloads, his comment that it's better for consummers is such a load of bull, it's not even funny.

Right the only thing keeping me away from pirating games are physical media.

If the industry goes digital only, there goes my money.

This. Well, this or I'll quit playing new games altogether. Either way, they're not getting my money for digital stuff, especially with such high prices.

Ugh, people need to take a course in basic economics.  As someone earlier pointed out, they will just be selling less games if people aren't allowed to sell there old games to get more money for new ones.  Demand for the games will not change (well, it could go down as there are some people that may not buy without a physical disc).

If I think a game is only worth $40 (I rarely ever pay more than this), then I will either wait till I can get it at that price (new or used), or I won't get it.

If it's such a big win for this idiot, why doesn't Remedy just go ahead and go all digital.  Nothing is stopping them as all the current console's would support it.  I'm guessing they would sell less than 1/2 the number of games if they went digital only.

A digital download only future is no cure for what ails the game industry.  It is a band-aid at best, and could be sticking a knife in your own back at worst.  All of the actual studies I've seen on the subject suggest that a healthy used market supports the new market.

Yes, publishing cost will drop.  But will that make up for the lost revenue?

Guess you can look at it both ways but I dont ever want to see a day where DD is manditory. There is no value in a DD colection but there is in a physical collection. If Ihate the game I just purchased I can sell it and get some money back. With DD im stuck with the POS forever and eat my losses.

Bolded #1: False. If digital data holds no value, why can people sell their WoW accounts, Xbox Live Gamertags and what not? What should stop me from selling my Steam account and all the games on it at the price I want?

Bolded #2: Sort of true, at least for now. On Android, you have 24 hours to decide whether or not you want your money back, and there is no reason why a system like this can't gain traction when DD starts to grow. On a related note, with PS Plus, Sony have demos that are the first hour of a game, a feature designed to help players better designed if a game is worth their time before they buy it. As DD becomes more popular, features like these are sure to become the norm for helping gamers decide whether this DD purchase is for them and help them with their purchases.

Cause that goes against policies and might get accounts banned. Also if I wanted to sell one game off my DD list I couldnt. I would have to sell the whole friggin account.

Obviously they're waiting for things to advance on their own weight instead of trying to force it. Usually force does no good unless you're very strong, and Remedy isn't that.

Just like PSN showed us.

I doubt Remedy is worried by that. They're making games for a company with a competent online service.

Since when did they change to Steam?

After Gabe threatened to eat them if they didn't.

I remember the day when members of the Playstation camp made jokes like that.  Gabe, why did you suck up to Sony?  I miss the hatred!

I wish Xbox fans were more partisan. They could have picked up the slack. But noooo! They have to be all cool and easygoing and shit.

What would make them more money, selling alan wake 2 only on games on demand, or selling it for wii2, pc and ps3 as well.

I don't mind buying dd games, just not at full price. Steam 50% or more off sales are great. 10-15 dollars for a psn game is about the max I'm willing to pay. I did pay 40 dollars for wipeout HD. The game is worth it, but I regret not having a box on the shelf for it.

Internet speeds and download caps need to improve too. After my ps3 died, it took a whole day, a lot of hassle and half my monthly download cap to redownload all my psn games. Psn really needs an interface like steam instead of browsing through a huge list of everything you've downloaded with add-ons, updates and full game unlocks separated from the full game. (and some of the add ons would not redownload grrr)

I couldn't even imagine having to redownload my full game collection. Just Killzone 3 by itself would almost kill my monthly allowance.
