Forums - Sony - Which controller setup is the best for PS3's FPS and TPS games?

I'm new to controller shooting games as I come from a Keyboard/mouse shooting game background like counterstrike and other old valve games like HL1 and ricochet.

I want to seek opinions on your optimal controller setup and the optimal preferred sensitivity on some of the PS3 TPS/FPS games like GTA IV.

Thanks!

First and third person shooters can basically be a little more precise and realistic with the 360 cotroller. The triggers/thumbstick setup,/and bulk make it a better chocie. However, there are some titles (such as the Uncharted games, Mirror's Edge, & the Killzone games) that work for both types of games on PS3 and just feel right with the Dualshock 3. Nonetheless, if I had to choose, it would the 360 controller.

For everything else (racing/fighting/adventure/open-world etc...), I would choose the Dualshock 3.

I think you missed the question there CGI...

Usually there doesn't really seem to be too much room for customization. Stick with the defaults and recognize the pattern that feels easiest to use. People seem to have different preferences, just like with PC, so you should just try out. Like I said, not much room for customization, usually just the same presets.

I also use the control setup that is premade by the developer, however games like Killzone offer you various controler-setups.

Generally, I end up maxing out the horizontal X-axis settings, and putting the vertical Y-axis around 90%.

Customization is unfortunately limited in most console games

i prefer default sensitivity because it keeps the game more realistic.

the only one ive ever changed is on COD4 because of the map size.

Thanks for the reply!

Generally I'm trying to find out(or collect more variety of opinions) the optimal button config(E.G. L2 for firing L1 for reload correct? I'm not so sure about this) and the optimal sensitivity.(E.G. <1.8 for CS)

So sorry if I didn't explain myself well enough in the opening post.

I'm just trying to prevent myself to not get pwned badly online :P

R1 for firing and R2 for realoading, using the R2/L2 for firing will be difficult because of the special buttons (you know what I mean ^^)

Use R1 for firing. I come from the xbox 360 background and I started by R2 as triggers. The problem with this is that not all PS3 games have support for R2 as trigger. Another problem is that its a bit inconvinient to use the R2 buttons like triggers on the PS3.

Using the R1 for shooting and L1 for aiming is the best. Sensitivity depends upon the game, like killzone 2 required a very high sensitivity for me, but CoD required medium to lower sensitivity for me.

Depends upon the game, I usually have high XY axis sensitivity for my games including Uncharted 2.

You get points for being a counterstrike guy.

Anyways, your question is a little silly - the "optimal" setting for the ps3 controller in shooters is your preference. Mess with the settings and use what feels most comfortable. Don't force yourself to adapt to an uncomfortable button layout unless for some reason you really have to, though I guess that wouldn't be an uncommon situation since for some retarded ass reason, fully customizable button mapping is actually rare for consoles this gen. Really, it's stupid and I'll never understand it.

With all that being said, go with your own preferences, but to put in my 2 cents:

This sounds about right.
