Forums - General - Do people still read books anymore?

I don't read much fiction, though there are a few authors I like. I mostly read books fer learnin'. I'm reading a book on the science of Leonardo Divinci, an art history book, and "the thinkers" by Boorstin. I occasionally read old fiction, and only a few more modern authors like the now late David Foster Wallace, or Douglas Adams (which isn't very recent). But yeah, I still read. I kind of like the idea of getting a Nook, but there's something about "paper" that the old geezer in me likes.

You can find me on facebook as Markus Van Rijn, if you friend me just mention you're from VGchartz and who you are here.

750 million...

So thats 2.5 books a year per person.

Not bad actually considering that's not the only way to read books.

I mean... i read tons of books.  Though from the library, or public domain online.

Edit: By the way... http://www.gutenberg.org/wiki/Main_Page

Edit 2: I do buy books too but usually only in rare cases of books I really enjoy AND can use as source matieral /things other people might find interesting.  Like the Malcolm Gladwell books and Freakanomics.

That may actually be skewed. When they say books, do they also include school books? If so then a huge number of that are just books people need for school, and not ones where people just sit down and read for the enjoyment of it.

I'd guess it was books books.... I mean looking at other numbers, it's put in the BILLIONS range.

Unless the book market has shrunk so much in a couple of years.  Unlikely to say the least.

Looking at these numbers i'm wondering where then 750 million came from.

I love books. I read all the time. And I mean book books, not e-books. I built a bookcase for right next to my bed so I wouldn't have to go all the way downstairs to grab a book.

I'm going to a japanese bookstore tomorrow :)

Some people make me wonder whether everyone knows just what is the difference between reading an actual, non-educational book, and some other crap that is online or in print.

Of course they do, I see plenty of people reading and books seem to be flying off the shelves during the Holidays.

I can't read E-books, I've got a few on my Ipad, but I just struggle to read through them. Now audio-books are another story, I'm not the biggest Dan Brown fan in the world, but I got 'The Lost Symbol' as a present not to long ago and I found it pretty enjoyable to listen to while working. That Brown, he sure loves writing bullshit, but his bullshit does have crazy religous conspiracies and hot women.

Bet with Conegamer and AussieGecko that the PS3 will have more exclusives in 2011 than the Wii or 360... or something.

I often read programming and science books, but I don't think I've read a novel in years.
