Forums - Gaming - I want your opinions on the Gamecube controller!

I don't know whether this was a problem with the controller, a problem with mapping, or simply my own silliness, but the only problem I *ever* had with the GC controller was the C-stick while playing Baten Kaitos. For some reason, about once every battle, the wrong corner of the card would register, and a 5-number combo would turn into garbage.

Other than that, it's a great controller.

Worst of all three consoles last generation. N64 controller was better then it.

I had a similar problem to this with the analog stick on the left.  It points slightly inward, as your hand will face slightly inward while holding the controller, but I always move the joystick as if it's aligned with body, and not just my hand.  Because of this, all my attacks in Smash Bros. would be slightly off, so instead of an "--> A" strong attck, I would do a weak upwards attack, etc.  I always lost in SSBM because my attacks would be slightly off.  I had to much pride to use the c-stick though, lol.

I hated it. It just felt too small. Because of that controller, I refused to play any sports games that were also available on the PS2/Xbox.

It is one of the most comfertable controller ever created, at least IMO.

Instead of seeking to convince others, we can be open to changing our own minds, and seek out information that contradicts our own steadfast point of view. Maybe it’ll turn out that those who disagree with you actually have a solid grasp of the facts. There’s a slight possibility that, after all, you’re the one who’s wrong.

the first time i saw it and played it i was like "WTF is this". But after a while i really started to like it. I especially liked how they were different colors so i had 4 different colored controllers. There were only bad thing about it was that the cord was waaaaaaaay to short. But when the wave bird came out i knew nintendo had a winner right away.

Simply the best, that is all I say about the Cube's controller!

Currently Playing: Skies of Arcadia Legends (GC), Dragon Quest IV (DS)

Last Game beaten: The Rub Rabbits(DS)

I wasn't a big fan of the 'Cube controller, myself. I loved the system, but the buttons were too oddly-positioned for my liking. I don't think any face button should be that much bigger than any other face buttons. Also, what was with the z button? Did it ever see any important use, in any game? I think they just tossed in on there as 'fan service' to the people who loved the N64 Z-trigger (if that makes sense).

Also (and this is still a problem on the Wii), why do Nintendo's first-party analog sticks for their systems have octagonal ridges, instead of being circular? It makes it all but impossible to move in a direction that is not forward, left, right back, or 45 degrees DB!!

One thing I did love about the GCN controller, though, was the trigger buttons. They gave a very satisfying 'click' when pushed in all the way. Made firing guns feel very cool.

As mentioned before. the Gamecube controller had quite a few faults. The buttons were far too raised, and in their full 'down' position, were still far above the surface of the controller face. this made pressing the face buttons unsatisfying. Both the d-pad and the yellow c-stick were unusually small. The c-stick also had a very poor grip, making it useless for the precision movements required for an FPS. I also am not a fan of the octagonal cutout for the analog stick. Yes, it does marginally reduce the learning curve for using an analog stick, but when you're doing a move like the circle slash in zelda, or any other move which requires you to rotates the stick, it feels unnatural compared to, say, the ps2 controller. The analog shoulder buttons have far to much travel to be effective for most high reflex games. It just takes too long to press them. Yes, a few games do benefit from the huge travel, but for the rest that don't the least Nintendo could have done is include a set of digital shoulder buttons. Unfortunately they only half did that, putting a single Z button in front of the R button. Finally, the whole thing looked like a fisher price toy, but as that criticism extends to the whole Gamecube, I am not sure it is valid.

Now I'm not saying that the controller was all bad. The button layout was innovative. The shoulder buttons and controller contour were both the most comfortable of the generation. But on the whole, I felt the cube controller to be a huge disappointment.
