I agree platformers suck.  To much of this press button to make a charcter over a dangerous pit or enemy BORING where are the guns and super powers up in this genre?

In fact it should be more like Infamous, because I don't like it when my characters aren't white middle class men like me, blue hedgehogs?  Gay.

Platformers fix your shit.

Even games like Assassins Creed, Batman: Arkham Asylum and Infamous have heavy platforming aspects.

A game doesn't need to have 'guns and super powers' to be good.  Yet some major platformers do have them.

Nuh uh.

Those games are other genres that incorporate some platforming into it.  Its not built purely on platforming because it would suck,  you want batman to jump on someones head rather than punching them in the face?

The 90's are over people get with todays gaming.

Infamous really isn't the best example to bring up for its platforming aspects. It's a guided experience that anybody can master. When you're traversing rooftops and sliding along a chain of powerlines, you'll often find yourself heading towards the next powerline even if you're not totally accurate with your aim.

Actual platform games are nothing like that, you need precision which is why anybody can play them, but not everyone can master them. If you make a jump and you don't get it right, you'll probably die, depending on where you are in the game. But if we're talking about something as precarious as riding a powerline several stories high, then yes you probably would die in the equivalent event in a platform game if you were off with your aim.

true 2d platformers are all about timing and having good hand-to-eye cordination skills. You likely don't get any satisfaction or enjoyment from executing perfectly timed jumps over increasingly difficult obstacles whereas other people (like myself) do.

What I love about them is the diversity  that can be found within them in terms of level design, theme, gameplay, physics etc. Just in one game, take for example Super Mario Galaxy the diversity of such things is amazing compared to other genres, But then compare this to other platformers like Sly,LBP,donkey kong country, Ratchet and the diversity is just so refreshing and all of such great quality in my opinion.

I 100% agree with this, and would like to add the bold and colorful art style used in platformers. You can easily recognize each game from a single screenshot.

In what other genre do you go from Braid to Mirror's edge. I wish games like Another world, Flashback and Heart of darkness would make a comeback.

What I love about platformers is just the feeling of compelte control over the character. you can jump, run, shoot, nearly everything.

Most other genres are limited to certain actions, take RPGs for example. Sure, I love RPGs, it my favorite genre, but when I see my char standing before a obstacle, where he could easily jump over, or just go around, but you are limited through the level design, then I just don't see this as realistic. Also, like other already mentioned, they often give a challenge, without frustrating the gamer. (Where Donkey Kong is an exception here, this platformer CAN be frustrating)

playing right now: Xenoblade Chronicles

Hype-o-meter, from least to most hyped:  the Last Story, Twisted Metal, Mass Effect 3, Final Fantasy XIII-2, Final Fantasy Versus XIII, Playstation ViTA

bet with Mordred11 that Rage will look better on Xbox 360.

The problem is that you were playing LBP 2.

That's enough to turn anyone off from platformers.

lolololol. No LBP@ just made me realize that i dislike most 2D platformers. I thougt it was just Mario games, but then LBP2 bored me too lol. Its just the fact that all you do is jump and jump. Just isn't for me i suppose.

Maybe it's not for you then.  I'd tell you try DKC Returns, but if you don't like Mario then you probably wouldn't like that either.

That's cool though.  Like what you like.  I don't like games about capturing Pokemen or realistic racing simulators and several people would tell me what's wrong with that.

Gee, I can't imagine why this guy got banned...

And if the 90's are *over*... tell that to the millions of people still playing 2D and pseudo-3D arcade fighting games while you're at it.

You know I was always wondering why no one ever used the dollar sign for $ony, but then I realized they have no money so it would be pointless.
