What I love about platformers is just the feeling of compelte control over the character. you can jump, run, shoot, nearly everything.
Most other genres are limited to certain actions, take RPGs for example. Sure, I love RPGs, it my favorite genre, but when I see my char standing before a obstacle, where he could easily jump over, or just go around, but you are limited through the level design, then I just don't see this as realistic. Also, like other already mentioned, they often give a challenge, without frustrating the gamer. (Where Donkey Kong is an exception here, this platformer CAN be frustrating)
