Forums - Sales - NGP & 3DS: Physical resemblance to past generation to hurt sales?

I think the 3DS isn't that big an issue, and as long as Nintendo START ADVERTISING THE THING WELL, it won't be

The NGP is different. The PSP already has an image issue, and if it's called the PSP2, many will see it as an increase (following Slim, 2000, Go etc.), especially since there's nothing which sets it apart aesthetically.

If it's priced at £300 or above, I see Sony being in real hot water. If they can't portray the differences to the public well enough, then many will see it as a natural rebutal to the 3DS, and just an 'upgrade' as opposed to the new console, and go for the console which they can get for less than half the price.

Hmm...

With the 3DS closed it looks like the DS.

The NGP can't be closed. Plus the bigger screen, different UI and two analog sticks make the it stand out when put next to a PSP 1000 to 3000.

I can agree with this--it's my main concern for the 3DS.  NGP, not so much, as I think it will be a lot bigger, physically, than PSP, which will be enough to set it apart.

Plus the second analog and the HD screen on the NGP.

That would be true if it wasn't for the 2 outer cameras, the obvious colour differences, the bulkiness of the device, the extra lights, sliders etc.

To the casual observer, maybe. But to us gamers (of which Nintendo are obviously aiming at for the launch of a new console) the differences are clear.

Here lies the dearly departed Nintendomination Thread.

I don't know, maybe. I think if Sony get some Call of Duty advertisement out for the NGP from the start, they'll be in a good position though.

of course it is! When you are "casual" towards some kind of hardware you care a lot about the look, since, you dont understand well the inner-technology. Thats something that Apple understands pretty well. All their products look irresistibly-good, even when most of them are technologically inferior.

Quoted for truth.  I hadn't thought of that, though it sounds obvious once you say it.  Once consumers are satisfied the brand name starts to have an effect on future purchases - something worked once, lets not risk a deviation.  Perhaps had the DS failed then Nintendo would have changed up the brand image.

Makes me wonder now how much different the next iteration of the Wii will look...

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

Call of Duty, Uncharted, Gran Turismo, Monster Hunter (for Japan) and maybe a Final Fantasy game will be the best thing to do at launch for NGP.

Of course it would be even better if Sony could manage to get an installment of each of those games within the first 4 to 5 months after launch would be even better.

After looking closely at both, they both have key things that make them stand out against their predecessor.

So let's not argue what they look like. Since when people will be seeing the devices, they will be on and displaying things that isn't possible on the older systems.
