Forums - Sony - Despite relatively low sales, Cladun 2 is profitable.

News like this certainly helps put things in perspective. During the week of March 21st – March 27th, Nippon Ichi released ClaDun 2 for the PSP, and the game saw sales of a mere 5,956 units during the week, and disappeared off the top-20 chart soon after.

Despite this, however, ClaDun 2 has crossed the break-even point to where it is now profitable, according to developer, System Prisma. For their next game, System Prisma say they’re aiming for higher sales numbers.

It’s interesting to see how in certain cases, development costs on the PSP can and have been curtailed to the extent that games can be profitable even with relatively low sales like those of ClaDun 2’s.

Who says 6k sales is a bad thing?

That puts all those niche Japanise games that ever sell something like 30-50-70k lifetime in a much diffrent light.

I love this story for a couple of reasons.

First is that it reminds people that not every games needs to sell massive numbers to be profitable, development can and often should be about knowing around how many sales you expect to get and budgeting around that instead of just shooting for the moon and hoping sales follow.  It's the same reason I love the example of Atelier Rorona because there is a PS3 game where the developers were perfectly happy and made a sequel after only selling 80k copies, showing that not every HD game needs to sell a million to be profitable, not even close.

Second, it shows that NIS isn't in as dire straights as some around here like to think.  Which makes me give a sigh of relief because I wouldn't get almost any JRPGs on my PS3 if it weren't for NISA.

...

they proabals have a work schedule like that, with getting paid for 40 hours a week

“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”
