Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo Patent Reveals Wii Mood Light

A newly uncovered patent reveals a possible lighting solution for the Wii that reacts to how you play certain games.

Mood lighting in technology is not uncommon, however for video gaming it's hardly been touched upon.

Nintendo may have been working on a new accessory for the Wii dubbed "Wii Light", a portable mood light that pumps out up to 256 different colours based on what's happening on screen, to really bring players into the game.

The patent, devised sometime in 2009, gives useful applications for the tech - shooting on target in a FPS, special hits in a fighter or even setting the stage for a dancing game for example. Games could be set to vary the lights, colours, intensity and effects on specific button presses.

Nintendo also propose the light be used to match a game's backing track - perhaps in a horror title or rhythm game to add that extra layer of atmosphere.

Philips loves to play with these kind of lighting effects, so there could be some inspiration from there. Though this does take it up a notch by not just enchancing the display but adding some impact effects.

Color me surprised !

Maybe the light will change based on the readings of the sensor?

I think Nintendo is working really hard to engeneer something new to desrupt the market.  This is not one of them >.< lol

I really need to hear what Nintendo has to say about this, because I completely don't understand it.

I'm one of those people who hate it when others always scream "gimmick!" at new things, but I'm biting my tongue really hard to stop myself from saying it right now. I don't understand the use of it at all....

I'll wait until Nintendo says something (most likely at E3?).

Yes, now my living room room can turn into a sweet rave party for around 200-400 dollars!
