The $199 argument: 80% of console sales come after "mass market price"

PS3 sales will double and consist at $199 78 37.14%

PS3 sales may increase, but not more than 50% 53 25.24%

PS3 sales may increase, but not more than 20% 34 16.19%

PS3 sales wont increase much at $199 11 5.24%

There is no such thing as... 19 9.05%

he doesn't know 60% of 3... 15 7.14%

Total:210

PS3 polls on this site ...

Anyway, traditional console patterns have proven to NOT be the case this gen.  This will be yet another example.

For the record, I chose the 2nd option.  That won't be sustained for more than 7 months, but it will be noticible.

We've been through this before if price was everything PS2, at $99 would be outselling everything rather easily. Price Cuts & TIMING make the difference.

PS3 isn't going to be under $200 until 2012 or later. PS2 was $200 in 2002.

2000 ---> 2002  vs. 2006 ---> 2012 is completely different from a timing perspective.

I also have trouble with the whole idea that people really cant afford $300. How hard is it to save $25 a month for a year? Thats how I used to buy games when I was in middle school and highschool. Some people won't buy because they think PS3 isn't worth $300 but thats a different issue.

The other problem with this argument is Wii & X360. Both are still $200. Do you think Wii has only sold 1/5 of its eventual penetration because it isn't a  "mass market" price yet?

Not everyone lives in America

For some territories 300$ can be a half of monthly salary (minimum salary in Poland is 350 euro, average is 800 but people in student age often get 500-600) and there are places in the world where people are lucky to get 200$ per month.

Also lower price point makes it easier to buy it as second or third machine for hardcore gamers.

350 euros is $500, 800 euros is $1,142

Your point?

i was clarifying...  my main point you have edited out.

your point?

Since most electronics end with 1$=1euro rape exchange rate it doesn't really matter.

Anyway my point is that 33% reduction on PS3 is not much in NA but a shitload of diffrence in poorer regions of EMEA.

If they make that little then why would they be buying any type of game machine in the first place? I think providing for themselves and there family would take away most of there money

PS3 will outsell the 360 by 2012

How can you make a post like this one while the PS3 is outselling the Wii and X360 week by week for quite some time now, must be obvious that the PS3 is selling not more because of the cheaper price;..

It's also true that most  consoles are sold within the first five years after launch. Which is the main flaw in the argument, the price points were reached far earlier in the cycle.

Didn't the PS2 get cut to $199 only 2 years after launch? That means it's spent over 80% of it's 'ten year' lifecycle at $199 or less.

Anyone can guess. It takes no effort to throw out lots of predictions and have some of them be correct. You are not and wiser or better for having your guesses be right. Even a blind man can hit the bullseye.

Not everyone is in the position to save $25 a month for a year on a luxury item (in 2011 you could argue that a computer and the internet aren't luxuries anymore in the first world. But game consoles?). Particularly adults on low income who live on their own. That demographic shouldn't be buying $200 game consoles to begin with though. Let alone $300 game consoles. I'm fortunate in being able to confidently say that I'm low-maintenance enough that I could reduce my "entertainment budget" to just high-speed internet if I absolutely had to. People are constantly convinced by the media, peer pressure, etc. that they need all this shit they don't need to be happy. If you can't afford a luxury, it's not the end of the world.

For this gen, it's too late

When PS3 hits that price, it'll be too late. Look at my sig with Darth if you don't believe me

Here lies the dearly departed Nintendomination Thread.

Well, the rest seemed unimportant in regard to this statement, and still seems. My point? What I quoted you say doesn't matter in the slightest because while we have higher income here in Europe, we also have higher prices - for example, a console costing $299 in the US costs 299€ or more here. I think someone said it before me, just wanted to clarify my point myself.

$200 will do nuffin.

$300 is the sweet spot and this generation's mass market price.

the 1 thing everybody fears, PS3 kicking but and taking names LOL.

it should be interresting to se wht the big 3 and there consoles have left when consoles hit that price point.
