Not everyone is in the position to save $25 a month for a year on a luxury item (in 2011 you could argue that a computer and the internet aren't luxuries anymore in the first world. But game consoles?). Particularly adults on low income who live on their own. That demographic shouldn't be buying $200 game consoles to begin with though. Let alone $300 game consoles. I'm fortunate in being able to confidently say that I'm low-maintenance enough that I could reduce my "entertainment budget" to just high-speed internet if I absolutely had to. People are constantly convinced by the media, peer pressure, etc. that they need all this shit they don't need to be happy. If you can't afford a luxury, it's not the end of the world.
