Forums - Nintendo - Review: 3DS

I am starting to have second thoughts about buying one tomorrow...

I have a 3DS pre-ordered at Gamestop, but I have been looking at the release games and its hard to pick any of them, they just don't seem to be my flavor. I guess I will get Super Monkey Ball 3D???

And, I went to Bestbuy to try a demo unit. The system loaded up Pilotwings and I turned on the 3D; my reflex was to turn my head away because my eyes did not like it at all (the image seemed to bow inward and blur) which is strange, because I have watched the 3D TVs at Bestbuy and they didn't have any such effect (maybe it was a defective 3DS demo unit? I dunno).

Anyway, I still would like to have some of the upcoming exclusive games for the 3DS, but I hope there is a way to permanently disable the 3D effect.

Also, is there any higher capacity battery options for the 3DS? I have heard it is quite a bit shorter than the PSP Slim's battery life with the stock battery included in the 3DS.

P.S. Who was the oh so wise designer that put the power button DIRECTLY where your hand rests when using the stylus?

Nice review, though I still don't think it's incredibly enticing yet. Need moar games!

And it's much better than the PSP's analogue nub as well, for it allows your thumb to rest in the groove on it, as opposed to sliding off it all the time

Are you trying to open a can of worm?

No? I just hated the PSP anologue nub, and since that's the only handheld reference point, it's far better than that one, at any rate

The battery can last up to 8 hours, even 9, if you have everything off.

The on/off switch is no real issue anyway, I've never hit it, and at any rate, you have to hold it down before it turns off, a wise feature...

Now your main gripe, the actual 3D. My advice would be to go in and ask for another unit, and ask if you can sit down for a while to get used to it. They should let you, after all, they want to make money, don't they? If you still can't see the 3D, then that's a shame. But you have to realise that the console isn't all about the 3D, it's about the pre-installed apps and the games as well (I'd definitely reccomend, say, Ridge Racer or Street Figther), and there's plenty in the pipeline to enjoy as well! This goes to anyone who's unsure about the 3DS, such as you and Rainbird- don't just judge the 3DS as a flat, 3-dimensional gimmick, but as a platform with limitless potential, and the biggesy evolution in gaming for years. And I'm sure you'll love it for years to come as well...

(Also, the first update came today, 3D video. Looks like a clipshow of programs from Nat. Geo Wild or something like that, but it really shows off the 3D effect, and it's nice to watch as well!)

At the end of the day, it really comes down to your personal preference, but whatever you do, don't write off the 3DS yet. Do so at your peril

EDIT**

It's quite easy to permanantly disable the 3D, just turn the slider down to full. Then it's just a super-awesome DS with better graphics, awesome release schedule, better controls and other nifty extras (3D cam, Music recorder, Internet etc.)

Already pre ordered mine on Amazon, then I saw today that if you pre order now you get $25 off a 3DS game.  >:(

I'd cancel and then take advantage of this, but I'm quite sure I'll have to wait longer to receive my 3DS, whereas my original pre order went through the day after the US announcement.  At least I waited to pre order Pilotwings, which resulted in me getting $10 off my Super Street Fighter.

EDIT:  I just realized the $25 off a game deal is being applied to all existing pre orders, so woo-hoo!

Nice. I got £25 off my 3DS due to going to the Midnight launch, it was well worth it...

I look forward to hearing about all you Americans talking about the 3DS tomorrow!

I'm not going to give the 3DS an overall score but for just the 3d I give it a

2/10

The 3D is flawed in so many ways it's not even funny. The sweet spot is not just a specific angle from the screen, but an exact distance as well. Even within that exact position it has problems. The maximum depth is only about 2 inches. The games look like a model with a flat background. In pilotwings for example this makes it harder to judge distance. Your plane is in 3d along with close by trees and objects but anything too far away looks like a wall. Most users overlook this because they are new to 3d without glasses. I have many personal autostereoscopic displays and all of them put the 3DS to shame.

It must vary from person to person, then. For me, the 3D is certainly the part which I'd give a 10/10. The angle for me is very wide and, on top of that, the distance doesn't seem to matter at all. And, I dunno 'bout Pilotwings (I'd assumed it'd be significantly better), but Super Monkey Ball doesn't fit that description in the least. The 3D graphics are the best thing about the game.

I guess either it just doesn't work for you or you have some downright fantastic autostereoscopic devices.

It's the later. When the 3DS gets a price drop I'll film the 3D and compare it to one of my screens, all filmed in 3D ofcourse.

Did you play with the slider on full?

I doubt you'll be able to show anyone your comparisons. Since, y'know, most people'll be seeing that on the 3DS, xD.

And yes, I did.
