I know it keeps me entertained for hours, having a default search that doesn't take literally hours is nice as well...

Well, there's an issue with your setup then. I had an old machine that I installed windows 7 on and gave away.. I believe it was an Athlon 3000 (those were what, 1.8ghz?) w/1gb of ram - And it worked great. Booted fast. Gave the machine new life. New owner only needed it to watch netflix and play simple games like bejeweled, but win Win7 is flies. If your 2.3ghz laptop with 4gb of ram has any hiccups at all with Win7, you need to remove some stuff from startup. |
It's running fine on the 2.3ghz laptop, it just takes longer to boot then xp, then it flies. She always uses the suspend feature anyway which is faster then xp's, until some update makes it reboot.
I wonder how it works with 1gb ram. I just checked, clean boot, 893mb in use, and I removed all the crap that came installed with it. (ok it launches msn messenger substract 22mb) 1.08gb now 1 minute later and a new updates are available icon, figures. My old laptop starts to really grind when it goes over 1gb ram committed and starts disk caching on a 5400 rpm laptop hdd.
I guess with a desktop hdd and bejeweled or netflix it should be fine. Not on my laptop though, firefox and plugin container have 265mb ram in use atm, together with win 7 no fit.

It's a decent OS, I was happy with XP, but I don't regret upgrading. Of course, out of the box I didn't like much about it, but with a few tweaks I got it running to my liking, like adding back the Quick Launch bar (seriously, MS, how dare you take away one of the best features of XP). Sucks that some of the upgraded applications aren't up to par (I despise any app that uses ribbons, I mean, it's bad enough that the horrible Office 2007 uses it...now Paint too? What's next, Notepad?).
I have to give it to it, it's infinite times better than the disastrous Vista, I had it for just one day (when trying to upgrade from XP to W7 without formatting the PC) and it gave me every problem imaginable to mankind, I couldn't upgrade to W7 because I needed SP1, I couldn't update to SP1 'cause I needed an addon, and I couldn't install that addon no matter how much I tried. I ended up formatting the PC -_-. Seriously, I never thought I'd see a crappier OS than Windows 98, but Vista proved me wrong, so W7 is as much a massive improvement over Vista as XP was over 98 (I know, 98 and XP weren't consecutive, but they were for me).
It isn't as slick and usable as Ubuntu/Kubuntu, I'd much rather use those, but given I can't play games on Linux, I really can't complain much because it's not like W7 is a pain to use or anything like that

I am talking about Firefox 4 :P. It did ask me for restart on Win7 for updating to Firefox 4, while the mac didin't. On the other hand, I think on the mac, it wasn't an update as a different install... I guess you're right. I don't remember other restart requests from Firefox on it's updates. Edit: On the other hand, Win7 updates are quire non intrusive, not the reminder nor the process, while the MacOS updates are an anoyance and a pain since a restart is always necessary. |
I updated 2 computers with firefox 4 and didn't have to restart.
