As always its fun to see comparisons like this but like others have said at this point in the generation it doesn't matter which one pulls ahead at the end cause neither one will do amazingly better then the other.

Back when 360 had say, 10 million install base and PS3 had 5 million, that's double the install base, which might be significant for a developer, for example, to decide on making a game exclusive for one system. Now, with one console at around 55 million, and other at 50 million, the difference is a mere 10%. Such difference tends to get even lower as long as they continue selling, so I think even if PS3 doesn't surpass the 360 anymore, it just doesn't matter. MS managed to get its great marketshare, and Sony managed to prevent the PS3 from failing. |
Well said.

Companies that lose five billion dollars and go from a dominant first place role in the market to fighting over last place tend to avoid looking at the past. It helps them sleep at night.

I am posting this because the effect in Japan will be dramatic and this will truly harm any chances of the PS3 catching the 360. I would suspect the remainder of 2011 in Japan to be 50% of the sales the remainder of 2010.

Dude, hadn't FFXIII just released in Japan? I thought the PS3 was peaking over there around this time 12-14 months ago, though their numbers are still impressive to this point.

I really doubt the disasters are going to effect sales that badly. Check Media Create, PS3 actually increased in sales last week. Yes, sales will be affected but it most likely won't have much of a long term impact.

Earthquake happened at like 3:30PM Friday on the 11th in Japan. So most of the sales for last week had already happened. Including a rather interesting new release that boosted sales particularly on day of release. That wont be the case going forward.

Nice graph!
Without Japan it would be 360 for sure. But Microsoft always struggled in these regions, for reasons mentioned before. So that makes it more interesting
Overall we need to wait until the end of June to get the full picture IMO, when the 360S came out, to see how well the 360 is doing YoY without a re-vamp, and if the PS3 can continue to outsell it, by wide margins. We shall see. But it'll be close at the end, within 2 mil likely...PS3 may just get it doe to a longer next-gen life if it's like the PS2
