Forums - Gaming - who buys game strategies anymore

They just seem too pricey for what you're getting.  Collectors maybe but the market must be fading fast.  Unless you're completing something in the first few days places like xbox.achievements.org. gamepressure and trueachievements are all you need.  I'm sure PS and Ninty fans have their favs.  I try to do my first playthrough before I go looking for help.  If I'm stuck on a boss I search specifically for tips on that and try to avoid spoilers.

I only buy the guide for 4 types of games now: 3D Mario, mainline Pokemon, console Zelda, and all Metroids

For all else i either consult GameFaqs or just go straight to expository YouTube vids (YouTube vids are what got me 100% on Sonic Colors)

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

Me... I love how many expand on some game concepts and include awesome art...

I still buy them. I hardly use them but just in case it is nice to have not to mention easier to use then the internet. Also whenever I got downtime it is fun to read as well, sometime they put extra things in there to read with regards to story and such. Dragon Age 2 guide is a good example of this in my opinion.

i bought a strategy guide back in like 94 or 95 for the original Mortal Kombat (or rather my dad bought it for me

I'm assuming only people without access to the internets would them

I started making videos for youtube; check them out.

Super C (No Deaths): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XHoJrHWATgU

Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! (Mike Tyson TKO): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J4L7oDV79aw

Systems owned: Atari 2600, NES(3), Top loader NES, Yobo NES, SNES, Sega Genesis, Sega Gamegear, Sega Nomad, Sega Saturn, Nintendo 64, Gamecube, Playstation 2, Wii, PS3 (slim 120 GB), Wii U

You should congratulate me. I destroyed the vile red falcon and saved the universe. I consider myself a hero.

Who ever bought them in the first place?

did'nt you read my previous post. ME

Yes and some other peoples. Guides are one of those things I have never understood. Sure from time to time I get stuck and I could easily use a guide online or not. But, whats the fun in that? It takes away the joy of coming across say a hidden useable player such as Yuffie/Moggle/GoGo/Umaro and so on. I was on my third playthrough of ff7 before I got Yuffie. I dont recall about GoGo and Umaro, but i know it was nowhere near the 1st time. I think it adds to the replayablity and prolongs the time you spend playing a game. With a guide I could have easily done and found everything during the first play through. That takes away so much joy for me. Its like a cheat sheet for a test you actually want to take.

I will say I love world Maps and think  they should be used to create hype in JRPG's. Not showing where everything is, just the world.

Only ones I have ever had was for LoZ: Oot, Paper Mario, Kingom Hearts 2 and the last one I bought was FFXII which was pretty great considering how massive that game was, but I see your point on them  all being online now so why bother buying them.

I buy them for every game I can. I love collecting them; just what I like to collect, I suppose.

I rarely buy guides, though for games like Pokemon or Legend Of Zelda I still do. Sure I could use one of those free ones on GameFaqs or GameWinners. But honestly I like seeing what to do with the pictures and maps. But actually on the day the games come out generally EBGames prices the strategy guide 50% off at least they did up until now. At the discounted price and if the game has lots of hidden stuff and puzzles etc...etc.. then I find the guides worth getting.

Now with Black and White the guides were sold out by the time I got to the store. So I have been using Serebii.net. But that lacks some of the content my friend has in his guide.

So yes their is still room for guides, a proffesionally done guide for 15-20$ beats the free GameFaqs guides any day. Though I agree many games don't need guides especially linear titles. But a good RPG or adventure game still need that physical guide.

I actually still have some old strategy guides.

I have 2 out of 3 volumes of so called Playstation Compedium (that's how it looks like), IIRC, I got one of them from Official Playstation Magazine, the other one I got from a friend. These guides contain walkthroughs and tips and tricks for PS1 classics such as Metal Gear Solid, Ridge Racer type 4, Final Fantasy VIII, Tomb Raider 3, etc.
These are the only things that can be called strategy guides that I have.
They're from 1999.

Today we have sites like Gamefaqs for text guides and Youtube for video guides.

If there's a strategy guide avaiable in stores here, then it's probably part of limited edition of some very popular PC game.
